I'm really on a roll with cinema visits (trying to build up my new Meetup group, found a number of films I just have to see!).

Tonight it's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Never saw it before, hope I'll like it. A friend can't wait to hear what I think (he loves it), so I really do need to go.

I must say that I'm even more looking forward to seeing Blade Runner, The Final Cut on Sunday!

Good films seem to be just like buses: there's several coming along when you were desperately waiting for one.

Went to see the film Saturday Night (2024) in the cinema on, you guessed it, Saturday night. Seemed to only be on then. Was released last autumn.

I absolutely loved it! It's about the 90 mins up to the live broadcast of what became Saturday Night Live. Fascinating. And very funny. I'll watch this film again when I come across it.

I'm rather desperate now to watch that very first episode but I don't think it's available. Must check again when I have more time.

So fun.

I'm feeling a little down in the dumps. I'm trying to build up a Meetup group based in London, for cinema visits and meetups around history. There aren't very many history oriented things (that's so weird), tho there'll be one about WWII later in the year. Plus the usual museums. I also want to do visits to archives and libraries.

Cinema is tough because most only publish their programme for the week ahead.

Not a lot of interest so far despite scheduling lots.

Feeling a bit blue.

How interesting. I knew there was more than one version of the Bladerunner film but didn't realise there are three and how they differ.

I remember being very taken with the big speech by Rutger Hauer's character. Then I saw it on television and didn't think it even had the same lines in it. Don't know which versions I saw. I clearly have to see all three again at some point!

Like tears in the rain.

And it means that with marking those jobs as done, I get to pull the "cards" from my deck and set them aside.

I'm using Notion: the achieved tasks automatically appear in another view of the same database table (I named that view "Done!", so very satisfying), and they disappear out of the general view. Just with the click of a button! Actually setting a check box to checked, but let's not quibble.

Now what else can I get done?

I'm really chuffed that I got one of my smaller tasks done (it was just a bit of clothes mending, one top). Took no time at all but I put it off for months last year.

I'm very glad I got inspired into a deck of cards approach about what I'd love to get done this year. Big & small. Getting things done that I didn't get to for so long, is such a relief!

I enjoyed the experience of this one so much, that I've done a second task too! Bit more of a challenge, now I get to see if it works well enough

I've been resisting exercising for my back and knee (you can do exercises to help your knee?), because I'm terrible at follow-through. It's very depressing. Start with best intentions, let it drag, realise months later that I stopped after three, maybe four times...

I'm surprising myself. I got four pretty easy exercises recommended by the physio, to do twice a day. What!? Does he know what I'm like? I'm lucky if I do them twice a week.

But no: once a day for a good week, sometimes twice!

@politicscurator

Thanks for linking the explorearchives account in your profile! I would not have found it otherwise, or not soon.

That's perfect because I want to build up a Meetup group for those interested in history in the widest sense, and encourage people to come to archives with me, in London. I love a bit of history research!

Happy New Year!

Wooohooooh!

There is going to be a third Knives Out film!! I loved and adored the first one, liked the second one, and will keep my fingers crossed that the third film will be okay. Rian Johnson is involved again, that's promising. And Daniel Craig.

It's called: Wake Up Dead Man, which I think is already pretty intriguing.

There's a trailer!

I can't wait.

And I'll take it all back if his whole shtick is to do with the publication dates: 1 April. But the erroneous information is just too specific for this to play well as an April's Fool.

Oh well, I'll probably never know

There is a bloke on Gizmodo who is opining about how an air fryer is a myth. IMHO, the guy has never used one, or if he did, then he did't use it in the best way.

Keeps going on about how it's just a small convection oven (yes, correct, and?) and then ends on how unhealthy deep frying in oil is. Eh?!? In an air fryer? WTH was this guy doing?

An air fryer uses a fraction of the oil you would for frying, you don't fill it up with oil. Good lord. Mansplaining at its worst.

I'm revisiting (and updating) posts and boost from my old account that I want to close eventually (the account).

Here's two blog posts from the British Newspaper Archive (ie the FindMyPast genealogy subscription website). These give you a more specific look into what newspapers they cover:

I made this lace shawl years ago. Luckily I got lots of wear out of it because the moths have eaten it shreds in too many places for rescue. Tiny particles in the colour of the yarn were dropping off this thing, smaller than sand grains but similiar in feel. No idea what this is. The beads are a different colour.

I sewed beads around the edge to stop it curling, and I'm happy that I saved those. Snipped off every single one.

And amazingly I can knock off earlier than I expected today! So kind.

And when I had to pop out for last bits for Christmas (didn't know about those bits early enough last night or I would have gone then) and almost missed the bus - it came a good minute early, I took a look at the fifty yards to the bus stop and resigned myself to walking. And this very kind gentleman stopped well ahead of the bus stop and let me on! Such wonderful, lovely kindness!

I am truly blessed today

Merriest of Xmases!

I still have to work today, but quite unexpectedly I'm in a pretty good mood. Or maybe I'm happily in a good mood. That may be because I don't have to travel this Xmas, I don't have to be anywhere, and I can do whatever I like (or not). That's bliss.

Merry Christmas!

If you're celebrating, and a happy time during this end of calendar year if you're not.

I got a message addressed to me from an alphabet soup username on an LGBT themed server, to click through to "read this, or not" - without any indication of what "this" is about. D'you know I'm not gonna click and that'll be NOT reading it then, thanks all the same. Must be a bot and a malicious link. Uhuh, not gonna. Blocked the account since.

Watch out for weird stuff like this.

My post sent itself and then I lost my edit, grumble.

I made two eggs, one at a time, played around a little with the temperature but I think 6 mins is quite good. The egg behaved and stayed on the paper, very happy. The basket only needed a bit of a quick wipe with dish soap, no scrubbing.

My gosh, baking eggs in an air fryer is so ridiculously easy. No fuss, very little mess. About 6 mins at 180° C

I'm thoroughly enjoying the snippets of quotes posted by the @murderbotbot from the books! Before I ever read them I was resisting hard. I don't know what I thought the books would be like, I was put off by the name. Was I ever missing out! So glad that I got over myself and got the chance to find out why the name. And now the bot posts are making me want to read all of them again, even though it's not been that long. Wonderful stories, great writing. Don't miss out!
