Allright, fuck you, YouTube. :bec_fu:
This "Sign in to confirm you're not a bot" bullshit has got to go. You mean to tell me that I can't watch a trailer posted on another company's website without signing in to YOUR platform?
"This helps to protect our community"? Really? I call bullshit. This only protects your bottom line and ability to feed your algorithm with my data and track my every move, Google. Yeah. I know who you are. Nope. Not doin' it. Fuck that.
I'll say it again: fuck you. AND the horse you rode in on, ya greedy bastards!

Well, I got nextcloud running locally, although it's really slooooooowww. And my reverse proxy isn't working quite correctly - all the static content and such isn't coming through properly. So, looks like today I'll be bouncing back and forth between my RP and the internal server where Nextcloud lives trying to make it work right with my public domain.
And then I'll putter about with performance tuning. I'm thinking that maybe the cacheing mechanism didn't get installed right (since I didn't install it myself, I'll have to check if the manual install tarball comes with its own setup included).
But at least it seems to be up and running in some capacity at least, which is a win in my book.

Look, I know that us Texans like to complain about how "cold" it gets here when it's not really that cold and most of the rest of the world is freezin' their keesters off in really cold temperatures, but I would just like to point out that it is currently 22°F (-5.5°C) here, which is damn cold no matter how you slice it.
See? I wasn't kidding when I said that Hell really has frozen over.

While watching ReBoot today, I came across the X-Files spoof episode where "Data Nully" was guest-voiced by Gillian Anderson (they were unfortunately not able to get David Duchovny to voice her counterpart, "Fax Modem"). I'd recognize her voice anywhere, and I had completely forgotten that this episode existed. They even made fun of those ridiculously high-powered flashlights that Mulder & Scully always carried around. Classic!
I had also forgotten just how many pot-shots the ReBoot crew took at so many pop-culture icons of the time. The Road Warrior, Voltron, Crossroads, The X-Files - nothing was safe!
And speaking of The X-Files, tonight during dinner I ran into an early Season 5 episode called "The Unusual Suspects" which detailed how Mulder first meets the Lone Gunmen, and it included the character of one Detective John Munch from Homicide: Life On The Street, who was always portrayed as a conspiracy nut (and incidentally also had several crossover episodes with Law & Order). IIRC, Homicide was an NBC show and X-Files was Fox, so it was surprising to see an inter-network crossover character.
Would have been totally badass if either Mulder or Scully (or both) had showed up on one of those other two shows to add some legitimacy to the tie-in and set them up as contemporaries.
Missed opportunity, I say.

It makes me sad and exceedingly frustrated that there are some Fedi alternative apps that I just cannot, in good conscience, recommend to people looking to flee the corpo silos because either the software's not solid enough yet or the lead developer/maintainer is a complete asshole.

The winter "cold snap" has finally made it's way down here to Texas, so it's gonna definitely be cold over the next several nights and for the first couple of days of the week.
And then it's predicted to be back up into the mid-60s FreeDUMB™️ units by next weekend.
ERCOT's not going to know what to do with itself.

Community is key. There's no room for loners in the Fediverse, because it's too big for just a few to handle and steer. Collaboration is the cornerstone of a free, open, and functioning network. It's not just necessary to build the software, we need to sustain and refine that software over time as the network grows.
And we must accept the fact that not everyone has the same idea of what "social media" is, what it should be, and what it should be used for, and learn to be okay with that. We need to understand what people are looking for, and focus our message to the appropriate parties and those who might be open to finally listening to an alternative.
One of my favorite quotes from a certain TV show is "It's not about being right, Mr. McCoy, it's about doing right." We need to focus on *doing right for the communities that already exist to retain fedizens and not just attract them.
And that's gonna take a whole lotta collaboration, my friends. We're not those silos - let's stop acting like them.

As a result of some conversations that I've had today as well as a significant cascade of events in the tech world and other spheres, I thought it was high time for a bit of a pep talk.
Cyberpunks, this is our time! It is time to be more punk than ever!
As tired and demoralized that we may be with the current state of affairs in so many spheres, now is the time to take a breath, take a rest if you need to, but to keep on fighting the good fight!
Without a doubt, It's disheartening to see our friends and loved ones continually succumbing to all the dark patterns that tech forces on them because "that's just the way it is" or for the sake of convenience. It is also frustrating for us to be forced, in many ways, to participate in a system that we no longer believe in. And we scream ourselves hoarse trying to sound the alarm, and it seems like so few are listening.
We must continue to evangelize our alternatives without enabling these silos to continue, and we must also learn that so many people are just plain lost and know no other way to live. They require time to hear our message. We must continue to build and maintain high-quality alternatives to give them someplace to go when the message does finally get through.
We must keep going.
We must show them the way.
And we must do it together!

Speaking of phone envy, I noticed that there was some bit of something that had gotten under the phone case and when I took the case off to clean it out, I saw that the back glass on my S20+ has a crack in and the corner is all boogered up. Guess I must have dropped it at some point and the case didn't protect it like it was supposed to.
But, as long as the case isn't broken and the screen isn't broken, it still works as designed and there's no real reason to upgrade.
Turns out that my phone is like 4 years old, which is a lot older than I thought it was, and yet, it's working just fine. Go fig.

Anybody else find it horribly ironic and deeply unsettling that the U.S. is about to inaugurate a racist, fascist President and ensuing administration on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, one day when we pay extra attention to and remembrance of a staunch opponent of both racism and fascism? Makes me sick to my stomach, if I'm being completely honest.
2025 is absolutely not starting out strong here, Universe!

Interviews with Prospective Corpo 1 are now complete. Nothin' to do now but wait.
✅ System design interview (whiteboard)
✅ Executive interviews
✅ Silly HR tests and Wonderlic test
I feel pretty good about everything, but as always, one can never be sure how well they actually did because each interviewer has their own outcomes, solutions, and biases in their heads that I can do nothing about. I just hope I said the right things and did well enough on the personality tests to get an offer. Rumor has it that I might hear back as early as this evening, or maybe tomorrow, which means that theoretically I could start working as early as next week.
But, for now, I wait. I'm just glad that it's complete and done with. Nothing left but the cryin' now, I guess.
🤞

I have one of those "Magic Bullet" blender-thingies that I use to mix up protein shakes and every time I use it, it emits that weird, metallic, "electric motor" burning smell and yet continues to operate just fine, as it has for years.
I'm always afraid to use it for more than 3-5 seconds at a time because somehow that smell seems to trigger the thought in my head that the thing is going to burn up or explode.
Is that smell normal?

$10 says that the Zuck's announcement about doing away with content moderation and fact-checking was in preparation for this little gem, as if anyone needed yet another example of why tech CEOs are assholes.
The days of the brutal and bullshit Jack Welch-era "stack ranking" are back in full force, people. The masks are off; tech work is full-on, literal Hunger Games now.

It seems like The Mouse is finally fully bringing Hulu under the Disney+ banner on the backend. I noticed the other day that the apps on my various devices have all been updated and the account is a "MyDisney+" account now.
Also seems like they're having some technical difficulties in doing so, because I can't seem to login to my old Hulu account anymore on any of my devices.
I hope they're not going to force me to make a new Disney+ account. I don't want any of that other stuff, I just want non-live Hulu for the 2 or 3 network shows that I watch from time to time, and all the old TV series content.
I really hope that Disney doesn't ruin Hulu as it is like Warner ruined HBO Max by merging with Discovery. It's like they're just begging me to turn to piracy though, at this rate. :matrix_xbones:

I'm kind of fascinated with humanity's general inability to be comfortable with uncertainty or just not being able to explain absolutely everything. Human consciousness has a weird relationship with faith; I feel like we all desperately need it, but seem to resist the very notion of it as some sort of weakness or flaw, and I really wonder why that is?
Religion can't answer every question and neither can science, so what do we do with the unknown in-betweens? There are things that are just not capable of being known empirically in our existence until they're objectively witnessed somehow. It seems like most of us tend to approach this quandary in 1 of 3 ways: either ignore it as being inconsequential to our daily existence, put our faith in some system to explain everything, or take that faith to an extreme into the "mysteries that only a select few can understand" line of thinking.
I'm also surprised at how much that third viewpoint gets chosen. Every religious tradition and secular system always has sects of adherents that believe that there are deeper mysteries that only they are privy to that go beyond the boundaries of the established and "public" parts of that system. Again I find myself wondering, why is that?
The human mind is endlessly fascinating, chooms. :smart: :shrimplant: :spock:

Reposting this from another conversation on what today's job search situation is like:
"Today's corpos are like some lonely guy on a dating site passing over perfectly attractive, beautiful, and nice women that like him because he's holding out for that one supermodel that's into frumpy, balding, unemployed men that still live with their mom."
