Heya, anybody out there got a copy of the Hackers 2 (nee' Hackers Vol. 2) soundtrack in digital format that they could point me to? I have a copy, but a couple of the tracks have somehow gotten borked over the years and won't play in various media players (but will, inexplicably, play just fine in VLC).

I'm not talking about the 1 or 2 disk Hackers original soundtrack; there were 2 more volumes that had some of the extra tracks that were actually used in the movie and a bunch of "inspired by" EDM and trance music to fill in the rest.

I have all 3 of those albums in digital format, it's just vol. 2 that had 4 or 5 of the songs corrupted and I'd like to fix them so that they'll play in any of my media players, not just VLC.

Can anyone slide me some properly encoded replacement tracks?

While in the shower, the thought struck me that we're witnessing Snowcrash playing out in real time with this whole Zuck vs. Elon trying to "out-nazi" each other bit in a bid to see who can be the real L. Bob Rife.

Zuck really wants to be Rife, but he made a couple of missteps that ensure that he will likely end up being more Reverend Wayne to Musk's Rife. Zuck thought that controlling the message by building and shaping the data in the Metaverse was enough to control the populace (and to be sure, it has definitely gone a long way).

But Elon played a longer game, publicly playing the "humanitarian", change-the-world "genius" by diversifying into several key hardware areas to distract the eye, all the while silently gobbling up control of the medium of the infrastructure - rockets, satellites, communications, transportation. He only bought the message platform to cement his control of the medium and make it indispensable to the Fascist-In-Chief and his sycophants.

Zuck's fighting back, but I think it's too late for him. Just like Reverend Wayne, he's realizing that he couldn't see the medium for the message, and a real nazi that has been playing the long game just like L. Bob Rife did in the book, has undercut him. :mark: is trying to make up ground to suck up to the fascists, but I personally think that that particular ship (or rather, the flotilla with an aircraft carrier at the center) has sailed. If Meta dies, Zuck doesn't have any infrastructure control to restart it.

And when I see shit like this, it seems to be pretty clear that :spacekaren: is winning this particular race to the bottom. :moodfacehd:

I know that the fediverse has its problems and issues, and has a fair amount of work to do when it comes to giving more power to the users to build their social media experience the way they want/need to, but I just want to say that it's a truly badass thing to see when communities start to blend and mesh together.

The community experience that I participated in today was something that I haven't really experienced since maybe college or the early '00s, and certainly not on anything resembling what is commonly thought of as "social media". Others might have, but I had not.

The :corteximplant: community here has so many avenues for connection, and it brings me so much joy to be able to login to microblogging platforms, real time chats like Discord, and international, multi-instance video chats. Our calls are already international due to the makeup of the denizens of The Implant here, but today we had folks pop in while travelling to the Far East, people from the EU and the US, some regulars from other instances that have found their way to our Discord, and even a new guest from a notable like-minded sister instance! I heard some new voices from some familiar PFP faces, and was just kind of amazed at how fluid and interesting the conversation was for several hours.

I know online community definitely has its problems and foibles, but when it works, man.... It's beautiful!

Okay, friends - as a relative newbie to #flatpak I was turned on to the magic that is #Flatseal, which is a utility that allows you to manage the sandbox environment for applications that you've installed via Flatpak. In my case, it was to allow #kiwix to save data to an external HDD. I didn't know about this tool, so that's why I'm telling you - just in case you didn't know about it either. :bec_wink:

If you're running Flatpak, I would highly encourage you to also install Flatseal to make configuring those apps for your particular system setup a breeze!

So, to all my #kiwix homies out there: I'm new to it but what with all the data disappearing in the dead of night these days, I figured it's time to get to savin' what I can.

Trouble is, I just installed kiwix via flatpak on my Ubuntu system, and I can't get it to recognize my big-ass external drive. I can't change it inside the app itself, so I found the config file and changed it in there manually. Now, when I open the app it recognizes the proper download directory but when I try to save something, it says that the directory doesn't exist (which it does, as my user, which is also the user that kiwix should be running as).

Anyone know what I have to do to utilize an external data location on a drive with a ton of storage?

Sweet Mother Mary, the fascists are wasting no time. Then again, they told us they were going to do this months and years ago.

Information is disappearing at an alarming rate affecting EVERYBODY. Federal government-sanctioned book burning without flames and smoke.

It's past time to start archiving, so LET'S GET TO IT and save as much as we can before it's GONE for GOOD!

I had to take a Hackers break during lunch today to get my mind right for the rest of the day. :Hackers: And of course, now the soundtrack is stuck in my head and therefore it is loaded up on Strawberry to keep it in my earworm for as long as possible.

Sometimes, ya just need a little :Hackers: to make the rest of the day move faster.

Okay, friends, I need some help from any of y'all that use Quartz as a static site generator.

I'm using it to generate https://preemchro.me, and I'm using the document graph component. At first, all the nodes for each article would show up just nicely ("self", tags, and backlinks), and you can see that in some of the early posts I made there which are still working properly.

At some point, I think around June of 2024, the graph view stopped working correctly and only shows the lone document node in the view pane. The "global" graph still seems to work correctly if you click on it, but the latest documents aren't showing the tag and backlink nodes anymore.

The funny thing is, some of them work on my local (either through the node testbed or my local nginx) but pretty much none of them will work on my hoster (which is sourced from github). And now, those nodes aren't showing up even on my local site for my latest documents.

Does anyone out there have any idea how in the world I can debug this to find out what's wrong? I've been beating my head on the wall about this for months, and still haven't been able to figure out.

I need some help here, folks! 🙏

So I've been channeling my rage at the hiring process into some writing today. A while back, I started a series of articles describing how job boards work. I figure that I might as well spread the knowledge that I gained while working at one of these places for 5 & 1/2 years to help educate folks on how these things work and maybe also shed some light on why the job search process is so shitty these days.

It's a bit of a US-centric take (as the company I worked for was US-only), but the techbro and monetization principles that they live by are pretty much globally applicable. It's an "unnecessary automation" problem, and that affects everyone.

Anyway, the articles should all be linked together, so grab a nice, hot cuppa coffee or tea, sit back and relax, and give it a read if you're so inclined. All together, it can be a pretty long read, which is why I broke it down into pieces and parts. And if you see anything that's wonky or doesn't make sense, feel free to let me know.

I'll finish that last post in the chain later, hopefully soon-ish.

Just remember folks: hyper-growth is pointless if you can't retain the users once you get them. Giving them a reason to use your platform isn't enough; you also need to figure out how to get them to stay (and that doesn't mean nickel & diming them for every little "feature" that they never asked for, or that they already had).

A sustainment mindset is just as important as, if not more so, a constant-growth mindset. Every thing's value is finite - stop trying to squeeze blood from a turnip.

The best way to attract new users is to make as many of the existing users as happy as you can so they do your marketing for you.

Okay, I'm still running into this FF problem where all of my text entry fields lock up and process at a super-duper slow rate, and the only solution is to restart FF after letting the process die completely.

Surely I can't be the only person experiencing this problem?

I don't know if I somehow overload the spellcheck or something by typing too fast, or if there's some sort of weird memory leak going on in FF, but this happens to me with noticeable regularity (although random timing). Like, it just now happened and my CPU wasn't pegged, memory usage was at like 23%, and swap usage is 0%. And it wasn't just Mastodon that was affected - all of the tabs that I tried to enter text in were stuck in that same way.

Even closing and reopening the "problem" tabs didn't solve the problem.

What the hell gives? Does anyone out there have any insight into this and how I can fix it? (other than periodically going in and cleaning out the FF cache and memory for the containers)?

Dear WebDevs,

If you are going to develop a website that requires OTP or some sort of external authentication mechanism, would you please - PLEASE - take the time and do the work to make the code entry box auto-selected? Like on mobil, if I need to copy a code from a text to paste it in, the "verify code" entry box should be the default field when I go back to the page after copying the code (if my password manager doesn't autofill it for some reason).

Is it that hard to make the code entry box the default and highlighted entry field? I honestly don't know because I'm not a front-end person, but as a user, it gets super-duper irritating if I have to take my hands off the keyboard and tap or click the entry box with the mouse and make it highlighted so that I can paste the code in there. This is especially irritating when I login on a laptop and have to get my OTP from a text message.

Just default enable the code entry field already!

Thank you.

Signed, a crotchety old and irritated 2FA user
