My cousin put in an order for a bunch of other stuff and threw in a power adapter, so looks like I'm moving forward with this little project 🎉

It has 2 removable 4GB sticks of Kingston RAM, and the SSD is 256GB. Even if the computer isn’t useful, it’s nice to salvage spare parts.

looks like I can get an OPS docking card or a power adapter shipped from China. Should I...? 🤔

I have no idea if this computer was pulled because it was upgraded or because it stopped working, and I have no way to power it up (short of soldering stuff directly to the underside of the board)

I pulled this for $6.50USD at a local thrift shop today. Looks like a compute module from some kind of display signage. It implements the “open pluggable specification”. It still has the SSD in it, so I’m interested to see what’s on it and see if I can get it fired up.

It has been zero days since I've restarted the "Morse Code Ninja" course because "gosh darn it, I really am going to get into CW this year."

Big hug to all you people who feel energized by hugs. I hope you have a good Monday.

Those of you who don't care for hugs: you are loved, you are seen, and I hope you have a good Monday too.

I did it. I ordered the stuff I need to start building a direct conversion 40 meter receiver out of discrete components.

If time is money, can I also buy the time I need to put it together? 😬

I'm considering creating a secondary mastodon account on a #HamRadio focused instance, given that a majority of my posts here are related to that hobby.

I'm not sure if it's worth it yet, but mastodon.radio is enticing me with its offering of an xmpp service, despite it being located across the ocean.

I watched the waterfall on my SDR when I was testing my AllStarNode, and I realized that both my cheap chinese HT and the crappy chinese HT I used to make the node have spurs all up and down the place. 😬

I don't have any real test equipment to quantify it, but it looks kinda nasty from my unscientific tests.

More gatekeeping on a community for a local linked repeater system in my area. Some of the comments go on to say "...you should learn to talk the right way before you transmit so that you don't sound like an idiot..."

The word of the day is empathy. People should strive to be kind to one another instead of striving to define arbitrary phrases as being more right than others.

Reminder: this is a linked repeater system... The post has a lot of discussion in the comments about what's right and what's wrong. The two phrases imply very similar things, and most friendly hams will get on and give some kind of a report that will help the caller determine if they're breaking the squelch of the repeater, their audio levels are good, and they've programmed the right offsets and CTCSS frequency.

I saw this and was just annoyed at how much debate happened over such a simple phrase when the post just needs to be deleted and the OP needs to take a chill pill. 😑

I’m getting excited about building a 40m direct conversion receiver from scratch after reading about the one popularized by the folks at soldersmoke (https://hackaday.io/project/190327/)

I already have about $50 worth of electronics components in an online shopping cart. Maybe this time I’ll follow through with starting my homebrew era!

I tile my windows in MacOS based on the fact that I want my terminal to be twice the size of the old terminal rows/columns for no real technical reason.

That means I set my terminal to 160x50, position it in the corner I want it, and then position my other windows around it accordingly. What a weird, esoteric digital tic to have.

These proclamations are brought to you by my daily affirmations that I don’t have to get caught up in nitpicking arguments about yak-shaving. If the shoe fits, it fits. I ain’t got time for that shit.

Also… sometimes using the right tool for the job means using JavaScript, and that’s not a bad thing. Use what gets the job done, not what seems “ethically” right by some theoretical logic (unless of course writing JavaScript really does kill babies or whatever).

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but… using someone else’s neovim dotfiles doesn’t make you a bad programmer. SpaceVim, LunarVim, et al. are a great way to boost your productivity without getting lost in config files.

I cleaned up our “Makerspace” so that we could give our homeschool community a little tour. It looks so good I just want to get in there and make something!

The nearest repeater outside of town is ~30 miles away. It’s flat out here, but my Baofeng and my mobile can’t seem to key those up.

Apparently there’s a repeater on a tower in downtown Lubbock about 36 miles away, but haven’t been able to key that either.

Unfortunately, it seems like some of the repeaters belonged to silent keys. May they be remembered well.

Nevertheless, the national simplex calling frequency gets no response throughout the day either.
