My health insurance company (#GEHA) decided late last year to stop processing emails sent to their customer service mailbox (replaced with the "message center" on their new website).
So they just started ignoring emails.
They didn't notify members to stop using the mailbox, or set up an auto-reply, or turn off the mailbox so messages would bounce.
They just stopped handling the messages.
And they apparently consider this a reasonable, OK thing to have done.

P.S. I am 100% in favor of putting pressure on any administration to do better. My problem is with people who insisted for four years that Biden wasn't doing "anything" about welcoming refugees and refused to acknowledge the progress that he had made. That's caustic, toxic bullshit.

Hey, people who spent Biden's entire presidency attacking him for not admitting enough refugees, despite the fact that he literally spent his entire administration rebuilding the refugee program that Trump destroyed, and getting it back from zero refugees per year to 100,000!
Is this what you wanted?

If there's one consistent theme that runs through all of Trump's executive orders, it's this: the cruelty is the point.

I just unsubscribed from #TheContrarian (https://contrarian.substack.com/), #JenniferRubin and #NormEisen's new anti-Trump endeavor, after subscribing the day it launched.
I gave it long enough to be certain that it's neoliberal garbage through and through. Just a bunch of status-quoniks who aspire for things to be how they were before Trump. As if that will solve anything. Clueless idiots, the lot of them. Or maybe just clickbait grifters. (Why not both?)

"Raising the minimum wage reduces employment" is wrong for the same reason "Raising taxes on the rich reduces employment" is wrong.
Both assume that we live in a perfect capitalist system without friction or corruption, where thanks to the invisible hand of the market owners of the means of production can only extract as much capital as the markets will bear.
It should be obvious that's poppycock to anyone with a brain.

And here's the one line of code I had to add to my filter to fix the problem (preceded by a five-line comment explaining what it's for and why it works):
1 while ($value =~ s/\n([^ \t])/\n $1/g);
Yes, it's written in #Perl. I still write stuff in Perl when it's the right tool for the job. Simple tasks that revolve around text processing are more easily done in Perl than any other language, IMO.
A ๐ to the first person who can explain why the fix is a loop instead of a single search/replace.

Why am I asking this? Because I have a filter which runs on my incoming email which decodes RFC 2047 encoding that didn't need to be encoded, and I just discovered that it's breaking the formatting of some emails from LinkedIn because these emails are including LF characters in the encoded text. I'm going to fix the filter to work around the problem, but I am curious to hear what other people think.

Here's an interesting question for you:
Can RFC 2047 encoded text in the Subject line of an email contain encoded line break characters (i.e.,, ^J, a.k.a. 0x0A)?
I don't think they should, because the point of RFC 2047 encoding is to encode non-ASCII characters which would otherwise be legal in the Subject line, not to encode characters which would otherwise be illegal, which includes line breaks.
RFC 2047 itself doesn't give a definitive answer.
What do you think?

Normally I diet in the summer and "bulk up" in the winter for exactly this reason, but for whatever reason I just didn't have the spoons to diet this past summer. I'm trying to do it now, even though it's a bad time of year, because I discovered after Chanukah (too many potato latkes, anyone?) that one of my pairs of jeans no longer fits, a sure sign that I've let things go too far. ๐

I've been feeling really cold this winter in the house, turning up the heat higher than I've had to in the past, to the extent that my wife has noticed and commented on it. Until today I hadn't figured out why, but I just realized the likely cause: I've been #dieting again this winter because I let my weight creep back up about five lbs higher than I want it to be, and because I'm running a calorie deficit my body is minimizing the energy used to keep my extremities warm. D'oh.

I was logging into the Equifax "Lock & Unlock" website earlier today to lock my credit report (it was unlocked temporarily out of necessity), and reCAPTCHA on the login page made me do EIGHT pictorial CAPTCHAs one after the other before admitting that I am a human being.
What the actual fuck.

Words can mean multiple things.
I don't think it devalues the plight or suffering of "real" refugees to talk about "Twitter refugees" or "TikTok refugees" or whatever.
We all understand that refugees fleeing war, famine, poverty, oppression, climate change, etc., are in a worse plight than people fleeing a social media site.
I personally find the policing of this particular word to be an unnecessary and alienating feature of the fediverse.

If you want to help put pressure on #Israel to honor the terms of the #GazaCeasefire and not sabotage it as soon as they get hostages back, which several right-wing fascists in the Israeli government have made clear is their intention, please sign this petition:

What the CDC is doing is using the 10th percentile of the past 12 months of data for each wastewater measurement site as the baseline for measurements from that site. The baseline is recalculated every 6 months.
The purpose of this is to normalize measurements across testing sites.
It is a reasonable methodology. It is not going to suddenly result in the CDC graphs showing "no COVID" as people are claiming.
Again, go read the page if you don't believe me:

I've now seen several people, trusted sources of information about #COVID, dramatically misrepresent the CDC's new wastewater baselining methodology.
The misinformation has to stop.
This page explains what they are doing:
https://www.cdc.gov/nwss/about-data.html#wastewater
If you don't understand what they're doing after reading that, then you're not qualified to comment on it and you should STFU.
