[#]HamRadio idea...

As you might be aware, some hams use "88" in place of "73".

I'm going to start adding "16" after "73" in QSOs, in modes where that works.

1 = A

6 = F

16 = Anti Fascist

Also, elon can eat $#!+ & die.

Question for my nerdier-than-most friends here on #HamRadio Mastodon...

I've used #GoDaddy as my registrar since the '90s, I think. Long time. They were cool back then. They've become more icky since.

Not moving my primary domain 'cuz it's too much work. But I'm also holding a domain for my son who doesn't have any complex needs like I do. Just an email alias that points to his gmail - that's IT.

Can you suggest a registrar that's fair priced, & good to work with?

I'd let it drag on too long already... my Ham computer saying it encountered an error. It's old. Its HDD is well beyond MTBF.

Installing #AndysHamRadioLinux #HamRadio #Linux on a not-as-old Mac Mini.

Faster processor. More cores. More RAM.

If the old one was very good, this should be marvelous.

Damn, it's a long day, though.

2025 #HamRadio goals:

Get a better antenna than rain gutter for 160m.

Change APRS node to bi-dir yagi.

Experiment with Slinky antennas.

Activate POTA @ least once.

Use the paddles (instead of WinKeyer) for more QSOs.

2m or above SSB or CW @ least once.

@vantablack

I don't have any Windows computers, but tempted to buy ALGO-RHYTHM anyway just because the story/blurb is so friggin' cute.

[#]HamBOLO

[#]BeOnTheLookout

[#]HamRadio

A friend of my wife's emailed me to ask about a #20m chat with her dad.

I asked after his email address, or if he TXTs. Doesn't do email. Has a flip phone. So he's "one of those" types of old people, the stereotype. Which translates to he's probably lonely. And heck, possibly deservedly. But for a friend of a friend, we can keep an ear out & give him the benefit of the doubt.

I'm interested in erecting a #20meter #4square #VerticalPhasedAntennaArray for #HamRadio but haven't found anyone who makes one. Probably have to build it myself.

So far, my searches of the web haven't turned up anything. I get the reason is a 20m yagi is reasonable for most, but I'm disallowed a tower. But I've enough space on ground for phased verticals.

Any of my fellow #FediHams know of one?

Just look at 40m & math out the differences?

I’m sure there’s a good argument I haven’t thought of, pre-coffee, from here in the tiniest room in the house…

But my first impression is that this is a wise idea.

Both #10meters and #12meters are pretty hot across the Atlantic today. #HamRadio

Here’s a #MachineLearning idea that improves lives & doesn’t make artists starve:

Rearview mirror including a camera that calculates exactly where to place LCD dark spots to dim headlights. Possibly same for windshield.

Imagine never getting night-blinded by assholes who drive with high beams, or have mis-adjusted super bright headlights.

So I finally bought a #HeatPump for the back yard shed. It’s a little one - the space is pretty small. I wanted to do this years ago, but the industry dragged its damned feet catching up with the science.

Intent is to DIY it. But the instructions say I need some tools I don’t have. #ManifoldGauge set & #VacuumPump

Maybe I’ll DIY all but the final steps, then hire that last bit.

Or maybe the cheapest #HarborFreight set will be cheaper than the labor cost.

What did you do on yours, Fedi-folk?

I have had some very interesting, sometimes deep conversations here on/in the Fediverse today.

I presume that I've now been blocked by a handful more people by now.

This is fine. This is good.

I really, really love it here.

My boss, & chief developer, was walking me thru some new java code for managing various file transformers (e.g. csv to pipe-sep, to xml, etc).

Code checks the transformer called, exists. I forced him to add a comment…

I want to build a small version of this thing.

Mirrors on my house and garage roof. More mirrors on poles in the front yard.

They increase the sunlight on a lengthwise strip of the driveway 4- to 8-fold. Computer's camera determines when the snow/ice (white/gray) has turned to asphalt (black), and moves the entire line of light a bit North to get the next strip of the driveway.

When the driveway's clear, point all mirrors to reflect right back toward the sun.

About expensive #EarBuds - in my case #AirPodsPro2 - & not dropping them in the toilet...

I'm thinking of mounting a mirror above the toilet, angled down about 45deg, so that I can aim without tilting my head down, which is the riskiest move.

Side benefit: haven't seen it in a long while.

The #AltText is very, very important for understanding the point of this post.

Because of #HamRadio and #Music hobbies, I have more sources of audio than your average bear might want to hear or manage. So I've got a desktop mixer that connects to my main #MacMini via USB.

Adding #AirPodsPro2 to this pile has been GREAT, thanks to #Loopback from #RogueAmoeba

I also heard @N4JAW this morning on 30m. Quite strong. Called him, but so did someone else. I listened along as he worked that QSO... the end of which I never heard. It all faded to nothing.

Later saw Jim spotted on a couple other bands. In neither case could I hear a peep out of 'im.
