Interesting interview with Peter Malinauskus on #RNBreakfast
Covered a few topics, one that doesn't warrant a mention, education funding and the last one of needing a cabinet reshuffle because the Independent member, Dan Cregan, is resigning
He seemed quite positive about having independents in cabinet. A sign of things to come federally?

The future of low cost housing?
3 adjoining units built in 12 days but they say in the future they can do it in 9 days
A good way to deal with labour shortages as well. Technology isn't all bad

I have some friends I chat with online from the US every day
They've just told me that there are immigration raids happening in Santa Rosa CA at the moment. People are being hidden in basements etc
Apparently being streamed on tik tok
Things are getting very real, very quickly, for a lot of people

Seems like Dutton is going to take a half Trump approach to the election
Picking up some of his attack lines on things like DEI, DOGE (with different names), mining and crime
Will run some lines on immigration and the like although will be restrained by the demands of business for staff
And looks to be trying to avoid touching gender and abortion, although can he keep his party, and the Nats, inline on those?
It's ugly stuff, question is will Australian voters buy it?
Speaking of buying it, Palmer is ramping up again in the background as well
Of course it also raises the question of election timing. Trump has only been in a week and is causing chaos already, is Albanese better off waiting until 17 May to see how bad it will get?

Missed another one, Claire Chandler from Tassie into cabinet as well replacing Paul Fletcher
Dutton has played this pretty well. Promotes an unofficial moderate in Coleman and I think 3 females into the Shadow Cabinet
Also
With Price from the NT and Chandler from Tassie which would both have target seats
Paterson and Sukkar into the leadership team, both from Victoria which will obviously be a target with Labor polling terribly down there
Credit where it's due, these look like pretty smart moves. Well relatively lol
South Australia loses out, losing Birmingham with no replacement from there. Given up on it?
I hope the newcomers enjoy many years on the opposition benches

Well that's a twist, David Coleman gets it despite not being talked about
Smart move to promote some females to cabinet in Jacinta Nampijinpa Price and Melissa McIntosh
Sussan misses out on the job she wanted ignoring convention. Will there be fallout?

It'll be fascinating to see how this plays out. Will Sussan get Foreign Affairs as Liberal Party convention dictates? Or be overlooked for one of the blokes?

7 - no coalition with the Greens, I'm ok with that but the reality is they'll almost certainly be in minority and are going to have to work with the crossbench. I expect the Greens to play a major role in the Senate. My preference is for it all to occur under another PM, not Dutton of course. A Teal? That would be interesting. Most likely Labor though
8 - probably good advice for Dutton to chill over Australia Day. Nothing is going to change, unfortunately. Dutton loves his culture wars, if I was Labor I'd be pointing out fighting them does nothing to help address cost of living
9 - Paris Agreement, smart to stay in. It would be ridiculous not to. Hopefully Trump is just a bump on the road. Good to see others in the US stepping up e.g. Bloomberg to guarantee the funding from there
Overall, it's going to be a fascinating election and election year

So here's a summary of what he spoke about at the NPC from the Guardian and my thoughts
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/jan/24/lessons-learned-medicare-and-attack-lines-nine-key-takeaways-from-albaneses-first-major-speech-in-2025
1 - apprentice and school funding, good to see
2 - biggest lesson, yeah world events have been a factor and will become a bigger one next term imo. Although hopefully not as big as Covid was in the previous one
3 - biggest achievement, keeping us out of recession? Yeah that's a good thing although the definition did a lot of heavy lifting
4 - campaign lines, I'm not sure Mediscare 2.0 is the way to go. It's been a long time since Dutton was a dud Health Minister. Focus on what they are actually promising i.e. cuts to services, employment conditions and ending the renewables rollout
5 - calling Dutton "weak" for not fronting the media could work although I wouldn't be using the term if I was Albo, he owns the label on many fronts. I hope he shakes it
6 - no referendums, gutless but understandable
TBC

Why on earth would you give an NPC address on that day before a long weekend?
I think @sister_ratched was the only one I follow who watched and only because she was overruled lol
Kind of sums up the mess Labor is in at present imo
We desperately need a new kind of government after the election, I really hope Albanese doesn't mess that up by losing too many seats

For what it's worth here's a forecast from the above mob if an election was held today
I like that it has neither party reaching majority, I have my doubts re the crossbench numbers at 16. Surely there'll be a few extra #25in25
Has something for every seat though which is fun

New Freshwater Strategy Poll out today, kind of lines up with most of the polls lately so I'm thinking it's probably an accurate picture of where things are at
LNP - 40
Labor - 32
Independents - 15
Greens - 13
2pp is 51 - 49 to the the LNP
Preferred PM is tied
Another poll pointing to neither major party gaining majority, hopefully that's where we land 🤞
With thanks to Pollbludger

Interesting one

Seems there are plenty who don't want her in the role 🍿

This one is obviously close to home for me but the opposition's attacks on the APS need to be called out
Jane Hume was on RN Breakfast this morning running their lines, to her credit Kylie Morris pushed back on some of the talking points
The 20% increase in APS numbers includes in-sourcing of previously outsourced work. Outsourcing is more expensive and the staff get paid less. Everyone is better off, except the outsource providers, with the work done by APS staff instead
500 staff were hired by Veterans Affairs to clear a massive backlog in application by veterans.
That is repeated across other agencies. Jobs weren't just created for the sake of it, they were created because there is work that needs to be done
They always say they won't cut frontline staff but the work of those staff is supported by those behind the scenes. Take away the support and it obviously has a flow on impact to frontline services
Don't buy the lies

There are lots of things that need to be funded by government but I think they are right in saying improving the NBN in areas that need it is an investment that will pay dividends
It's just a shame the original mantra of "do it once, do it with fibre" wasn't applied. Turnbull really dropped the ball on this one
Also agree it's increasingly concerning that people are relying on Starlink given how Musk has lost the plot
I wonder if the recent rash of spending in rural and regional areas is a lesson learnt from the Queensland election where Labor was crucified outside Brisbane?

I just had reason to look up school holiday timing and it's not ideal for 12 April with Queensland, NT and Victoria on holidays at the time and everyone else starting that weekend
Mind you that flows through to crossing over with campaigning during the school holidays if it's 17 May
Maybe they do call it before WA finishes voting on 8 March for 5 April?

There was a bit of discussion here this morning about Dutton's interview on AM this morning, here's a link. He was second up after the LA fires
I often tune out of this kind of thing but I wanted to hear what lines they'll be running given the election is getting closer, I still think 12 April
All pretty standard stuff, ridiculous they stole the NZ government slogan of "Back of Track" especially as NZ is a bit of a train wreck
Seems they are going to try and blame government spending, state and federal, for the cost of living crisis via it putting upward pressure on inflation and therefore interest rates
Strong appeals to small business and outer suburban voters
No surprise crime will be in play
No real substance in terms of policy at this stage so we'll see what they come up with
