I turned off Gemini in messages on my default messaging app the moment I saw any Gemini thing show up, but I just got a message from Gemini anyway... Does anyone know of a more permanent way to kill Gemini? I have signal and use it for many chats, but do message many people that are not all that privacy minded and need a default app that can do sms/rcs without requiring them to get anything special on their end. I just don't want any AI in my conversations if I can help it.

It's crazy that due to bad frequencies but also a little due to bad right of way, taking the t to 4th and king from 22nd takes as long as taking the Caltrain to 22nd from mountain view

Absolutely love it when a car decides to have an accident on the Caltrain train tracks so I can get off at 22nd Street and either walk home in 39 minutes or take the T and get home in 50

So it took me an hour and 16 minutes to get from the Bart platform at SFO to my transit stop of choice near my apartment. When I arrived at the Bart platform, it said the next yellow line train was in 3 minutes, and though it arrived on time, it didn't actually leave for another 14 minutes. When. I arrived at the T platform, it said the next train was in 14 minutes, but it didn't arrive until 20 minutes. Neither platform announced any delays.

Once again, thankful I had the option to use transit, but it seems unideal for a 76 min trip to have 20 minutes of unnanounced delays!

After 2 weeks split between NYC and DC, I gotta say, it's nice to go to train platforms without worrying about the schedule and bike around without worrying about getting dumped into a mulit-lane high speed road type situation. I know we have it good in the bay compared to most of the country, but wow not only could we do stuff better, but especially for bike infra, other cities are making leaps and bounds, while we're still fighting about a mile-ish of bespoke bike lane on one street

It just doesn't make sense that when you get to the train platform, there's no clearly signed way to know which train to get on to to leave the station soonest... Which feels like the bare minimum for an end of the line (ish) station?

And while your train is waiting to depart (sometimes with open doors, sometimes with closed doors, my experiences are mixed), another train of the SAME LINE can arrive and depart on the other platform????

Taking the DC metro to Reagan and then taking Bart from SFO feels like it's gotta be the two extremes of airport train service in the US, right? The metro platform is on the through-running line right with trains every 5 minutes (or less?) across the street from the main terminal, and you just go down the steps and there you are. At SFO, you airtrain to the edge of the airport, then wait at a platform for up to 20 minutes, but once on a train, you can still end up waiting for another 14 minutes!

This article had some themes that I've been thinking about a lot. Biggest, there's the huge collective shift in behavior caused by the pandemic that has remained, with WFH and at-home activities remaining big compared to pre-pandemic commutes and nights out. This often gets waved off as "crime" or "kids these days," but it's clear there's been a huge series of shifts in how people move and spend in cities

Does anyone here know if there's a tent limit for hike-in sites in California state parks? I've tried looking all over the website and failed to find it, and couldn't get a human on the phone at 3 pm today on either the state or regional phone number. They list per-person limits, but I can't imagine it's ok to pull up with 4 2-person tents, right?

I love BART and how it combines with my bike and our local geography to let me visit beautiful parks that feel like they're in the middle of nowhere from my apartment in the city and I don't even need a car

I'm obsessed with weak and watery sunsets in the winter, something about them makes me think of a casual assertion by nature and winter itself over the power of the sun. I feel like I haven't seen many of those since moving to San Francisco, but this one from a few days ago has really stuck with me

Being a little sick on a cold rainy day is amazing, just sipping warm drinks and eating soup and reading as the rain patters against the window is so nice. On the other hand, being sick on a warm sunny day when there's an event you wanted to attend sucks so much.

It bugs me how often meaningful ui changes are just required as part of app updates... Would it be feasible to make the ui aspects of updates optional? Or to require apps to show examples of the new changes as part of the update description for those who want to check?

Went on a walk to look at Christmas lights with my parents and was struck by the magnitude of energy savings we've gotten by figuring out how to effectively replace incandescent and fluorescent lights with LEDs over the past decade... I feel like this has genuinely got to be one of the better technological innovations for climate since 2010? I don't think they've had induced demand for lighting in a way that would be negative either, but may be wrong on that
