"Review Spam," or commercially motivated posts, on the Internet Archive spiked to 99.9% of our reviews just before the election and when we were hit with a cyber attack and ddos.

When we recovered, spam outnumbered real reviews 20-to-1.

It has always been a cat-and-mouse game, but the mice became RoboMice.

So now the @internetarchive has RoboKitties!

RoboKitties-- Go Eat them RoboMice! (Robokitties are currently winning.)

Space Oddity by Bowie-- ever seen the film version from then? I hadn't.

Overview of cyberattack response on Calgary Public Library: it was a ransomware attack, like Toronto Public Library. they shut down all servers.

6 weeks "holding pattern" to get first services back up. Said it could have been much worse. And back stronger!

US AI regulatory uncertainty helps the huge publishers and co's.

Europe regs encourage cultural heritage and research orgs, but not commercial players.

Japan regs favor innovation by small and large via regulatory clarity.

"More recently, companies such as OpenAI and Google have struck exclusive data-sharing deals with publishers, major forums such as Reddit, and social media platforms on the web. But this becomes another way for them to concentrate their power."

Dear #Waymo : Are your cars allowed to rest in the neighborhoods? (uber's are, but you guys?)

I get a thrill every time I see a Waymo in SF. Really.

But I don't see them hanging out in legal parking spaces-- which I would think would be more energy efficient as you wait for a ride request.

I know there are depots (and loved @via ' streaming of one). you could leave a legal parking spaces if someone wanted it. At least you saving energy, money, and wear.

And being closer to requestors...

I hope we can make digitization into something like a maker space in libraries-- you can bring things over and walk away with a URL or a thumbdrive.

"what is the biggest change in computer software in recent times?" (question from a friend)

his answer: the move away from the filesystem.

Another answer: Software is increasingly "trained" rather than procedurally programmed.

"New in Two"? [years]

"New in Three"?

flex, turns out to be "New in Five"

how often does your org replace your laptop?

how often do you replace your phone (in practice, including accidents)?

KPMG, 30 years ago, had a 3 year rule for laptops, the Internet Archive adopted this, but most people voluntarily seem to keep their laptops for 5 years.

I have been keeping my phone for 5 years, often cut short by accidents.

how about you? Any experiences?
