Then after half an hour of hoop-jumping "we can't process your cheque right now, please try again later".
How many times could I have walked to the letter box and back in the time wasted so far, and I still haven't succeeded?

OK, so I found I had the app on my phone. It wouldn't run, saying that this might be because it was out of date. The app didn't update itself and Android didn't update it automatically so I had to research how to do a manual update.
Then it says it doesn't recognise my device and I have to re-register from scratch. Which involves typing in all my personal info, no doubt. I wonder whether this is the genuine bank app I'm running or some sort of scam? How to tell?

Somebody has sent me a cheque. But the previous process of sticking it in the post with a bank giro credit form no longer seems to exist, at least with my bank. So WTF am I supposed to do?
Options appear to be
(1) Physically take it into a bank branch. Which is a much longer journey than the letter box, and is an unnecessary covid exposure risk, and isn't open 24/7 like the letter box.
(2) Download some app, spend however long it takes on the security theatre to get it to work, use that. And then lose the password so if I get another cheque in another several years' time I'll have to start all over again.
This process of gratuitously making things more difficult just for the fun of it is called #enshittification, isn't it?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1we943zez9o "the timing and reduction of the final offer compared to the previous government's proposal"
So, in plain English, "Labour weren't going to bribe us as much as the Tories were".
Another failure of #brexshit, which was, amongst other things, supposed to free us from the nanny-state forrin-imposed rules limiting how much we were allowed to bribe companies to set up here rather than somewhere commercially more advantageous.

Here's one way HMRC could reduce the amount of paper they send out - only send me one copy of the flyer advertising the app.
Plus presumably they've sent my wife a few copies as well.
I get that they want to outsource the printing to us, but given the astonishing rip-off that's printer ink I think I'll carry on letting them send us paper statements.

Adjacent stories on BBC front page.
Guess whether either story mentions climate change.

OK, I exaggerate slightly. We do go to restaurants when they're the only convenient source of food (eg we're travelling) and we can eat in an uncrowded outdoor area.
So we had lunch outdoors last weekend. We weren't the only ones - the outdoor tables filled up before anyone sat down indoors. Yes, in England[#] in January.
[#] Well, not England, Cornwall to be more accurate.

An entire article on why people aren't going to restaurants without a single mention of the world "covid".
We can well afford to go to restaurants but we're not aware of any that it would be safe to go to.

So I get a plausible reading text claiming to come from "NHSResearch" inviting me to join a research programme. So far so normal. But the link it wants me to click on is to "mygp.com" - really? Not an NHS URL, not even a .uk URL? I think I'll treat it as a scam and ignore.

And another one. Yet again the response to a disaster caused by climate change is ... to find some more carbon to burn.
"We panicked, and ran to load the cars again. I checked my car - low on gas - and sent my partner out to find some. He had to drive to four different stations before he found one with any supply."

Response to LA fire?
'"We got in the car and drove," she says.'
FFS.
Then she'll be surprised when next year's fires are worse.

The joys of rural living.
We heard the front door open, but we were both together and there was nobody else in the house and no visitors expected. So who could be opening the front door?
It was the postman, opening the front door to put the parcel indoors rather than leave it outside in the rain.
This is no doubt perfectly normal for people who don't live in towns but it was a new one on me!

WTGAF? How can it be sane, let alone legal, to manufacture such a thing?
And if for some reason you have managed to obtain one, FFS please DO NOT abandon it in a rented holiday cottage, plugged into a wall socket, thus leaving the landlord liable to a manslaughter charge if they didn't happen to spot it and remove it.

@racingdaily So smoking can be regarded as the exact opposite of cycling?
Spend one minute smoking and die a minute earlier.
Spend one minute cycling and die a minute later.

I asked Google "are all twin slot shelving systems compatible".
The AI said "yes".
The correct answer is "no".
You can't get much more wrong than this. There are (at least) two standards, 32mm pitch and 5cm pitch - you'd think it could have mentioned this. It's a good thing I didn't just believe it and buy stuff at random, isn't it.

Gas fire free to collect from #Cambridge. Our gas fitter says this is a good piece of kit, "they don't make them like that any more".
It worked last time we used it, but we've remodelled the room such that there is no space for a gas fire any more.
Not for DIY installation, get a real gas fitter to do it.
