So after a lifetime of working mostly in #Cambridge start-ups, and having received shares and share options multiple times all of which have until today turned out to be worth 0p, and now being past retirement age, I have finally received some cash today with my current employer being taken over.

@TimWardCam I think this is the reality people need to realise about 'share options' and equity. Quite often it translates to nothing, especially if you have a tiny share and it gets diluted because of the terms of investment or acquisition. Also having any 'cash benefit' is very dependent on either getting dividends or someone actually willing to buy your shares (after they finally vest according to specific conditions). But good to hear it finally worked out for you.

@stew_sims I know it works sometimes - I know people for example who worked at ARM at the right time and now own yachts.

@TimWardCam yeah it's very much a thing that works out for a minority and is used as a carrot to join startups. I've been there, didn't work out for me and all the bs in that world just turns me off from wanting to work in the tech industry, particularly startups. I'd rather just be better paid or have a better pension contribution these days.

@TimWardCam or to look a it another way: the value of a decent pension is very underrated especially in the tech industry.
