Personal story:
As a teenager I used to say the serenity prayer every night: “Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”.
It took another twenty years to gain the wisdom to realise I’d spent my life trying to accept something that could, in fact, be changed.

In 2024, wind overtook gas to become Britain’s largest single source of electricity, in the same year that our last coal-fired power station closed. See the live data at https://grid.iamkate.com

British wind turbines averaged a record 22.54GW of power generation between 3:30am and 4:00am this morning, satisfying 84% of our needs at the time.
Additionally, energy exports exceeded gas-fired power generation between 11:30pm last night and 6:00am this morning.
Live data can be seen on my site at https://grid.iamkate.com.

I hope this e-mail… doesn’t find you.
I hope you escaped the corporate life.
I hope you bought that hectare of land.
I hope your crops are thriving.
I hope your crafts bring joy.
I hope you found peace between the deep blue sea and high blue sky.
I hope at night a million stars blanket your slumber, and every dawn reveals new wonders.
I hope.

Later today Britain’s last remaining coal-fired power station will shut down, bringing to a close 142 years of power generation that began when the world’s first coal-fired power station, at 57 Holborn Viaduct in London, started operation on 12th January 1882.
When I created https://grid.iamkate.com in 2012, coal accounted for 40% of Britain’s power generation. It was overtaken by gas in 2015, nuclear and wind in 2016, and solar in 2019. As I write this, wind is producing 40% of Britain’s power.

(2/2) …we were at a Pride event (the “Grow With Pride” seeds were from a National Trust stall). The carefree little girl was trans.
All I’ve been able to think about since is the hell she’ll go through in a few years’ time as she’s forced to endure male puberty because transphobic politicians (both Conservative and Labour) have banned safe and effective medication in the belief they know better than doctors, parents, and — most importantly — kids who have known for years exactly who they are.

Earlier today a little girl (maybe 9 or 10 years old) came up to me and asked me to open a bottle of water for her, as she’d been given a packet of seeds and a dry compost plug in a paper cup and wanted to plant them immediately.
We chatted about the different shapes of seeds — she liked the ones with a tuft of bristles at the end. After she had planted them she gave me a hug and then ran off towards the next thing that had grabbed her attention.
It sounds idyllic, doesn’t it? However… (1/2)
