Personal story:

As a teenager I used to say the serenity prayer every night: “Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”.

It took another twenty years to gain the wisdom to realise I’d spent my life trying to accept something that could, in fact, be changed.

@kate my personal realization is that most religions are philosophical (and superstitious) construct whose final intent is to persuade people to accept and submit to the dominant power and the prevailing political status quo.

History demonstrates that in every age religious power systematically supported and was complicit with whoever detained the political power, helped to preserve it and prevented people from changing.

No surprise prayers are about “accepting”, not “rebelling”.
