me: [makes some goofy dad joke]
12yo: "That's mildly concerning."
12yo: "Well I guess you're a dad in his 40s, so Alzheimer's makes sense."

Still very funny to me that this building's wifi (an NYU building) blocks mastodon.online but I don't even need to bypass it because both my local instance (social.ridetrans.it) and my frontend (phanpy.social) are not blocked.

[#]Climbing is so closely associated with what I eat and my weight.
I eat a bunch of ice cream and carbs the day before; I'm like 2 lbs heavier when I go to climb, and I'm falling off of V2s and having trouble starting V3s.
I eat healthier and don't overeat on the day before; I don't have that extra weight and I'm climbing V3s and falling off V4s.

On of my kid's teachers canceled a meeting with us today because his car wouldn't start in the cold. Cars, as always, remain incredibly stupid.
[#]FuckCars #BanCars
[edit: And I don't mean that he couldn't, like, drive to our silly little meeting or something. I mean that he actually had to take the day off of work because he couldn't drive to school.]

With this new administration, I've been pondering whether I should auto-delete my toots after a certain number of days.
But I enjoy being able to search my old posts for reference - what I really want is to automatically make my toots private after a certain number of days..

me: "Wow that's a lot of farts."
7yo: "I'm having a half-off sale on my farts!"
me: "Wow, half off? How much do you normally charge for your farts? Did you know that mommy gives her farts away for free?"
12yo [yelling from inside of his bedroom]: "Hey, can you close my door some more?"
me: "What's the matter, you don't want to hear our fart conversation?"
12yo: "Like, A LOT more?"

That AI CEO douchebro talking about how no one wants to learn to play music anymore is still very amusing to me. I was just chatting in a waiting room with someone whose 12yo is learning to play drums, and she's complaining about how ridiculously loud it is.
(I gave her some suggestions as someone who drove people nuts for years with my loudness.)

Okay, listen. The NYT is going to continue to suck. It's going to continue to normalize fascism. It's going to continue to push absolute bullshit, and it's going to continue to publish opinion pieces by monsters who are operating in bad faith.
Acting shocked that they do this is boring. It also helps normalize the idea of the NYT as a place for unbiased, reasonable takes. The NYT is very much not that.

This is why we'll never win over opinions about how safe the subway is until we house people and actually fund subway maintenance. Right now the vibes in the subway are: dingy, broken, and wait, is that person over there shooting up? It doesn't matter how what the actual stats are about murders/assaults/etc.

Congestion pricing is just the latest example of how politics is almost entirely about vibes and not facts.
You could swear up-and-down that congestion pricing will be awesome, you could show people the studies, tell them about opinion polls from other places.. Doesn't matter. The vibe is "tax", so opinions will be overly negative. Then you implement it, and suddenly the vibes are "hey no traffic this is great!"

Sometimes in software you want to remove support for something, but you're not sure if anyone is actually using it or not.
So you intentionally break it. If no one complains, then you know that no one was actually using it.
This is a public service announcement - make sure you file bugs when you notice things breaking in your favorite piece of free software!

In retrospect, it was probably a mistake to teach the 7yo to say "Hey look, it's a full moon!" and then pull down her pants.
