I asked the author, and indeed these are different, and she sent me a link to a page explaining the differences, a page which has, as its title, 'phrase 1 vs phrase 2: what are the differences'.

A properly functioning search engine would have placed this page at the top of the results. But in our current world of AI-influenced search, this page didn't show up.

There has been much discussion about how poor search results have become, and I just experienced it today. In editing some text from a colleague, I noticed two very similar phrases mentioned in separate paragraphs as though they might refer to different things, but it wasn't entirely clear. So I did a search (on a major engine) of the type 'phrase 1 vs phrase 2', and all that came up were pages about phrase 2.

My phone reminded me that this photo was taken four years ago, when I enjoyed the company of THREE Basset Hounds: Dermot, nearly 13, is sniffing the posterior of a not-too-pleased Panda, who was 5 1/2, while her son, Pippin, then 9 months old, looks at the camera. Dermot passed away 4 months later. Panda passed away 2 1/2 months ago now. So it's just Pippin with me now. And Pippin ended up larger than his mother or Dermot ever were. #DogsOfMastodon #BassetHounds #memories

And so I have covered the Japanese false holly plants with crumpled newspaper and black plastic garbage bags, weighted down with stones, in the hope that keeping the plants covered and protected from any wind will allow the temperatures surrounding the plants to remain warm enough to prevent any damage.

From the experience of similarly cold temperatures around Christmas two years ago, I am fearful for my Japanese false holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki'). Two years ago, much of its foliage and stems were killed by these temperatures. The plants have grown back, though with a lower habit than before.

It could be the case that later presidents who were relatively young when entering office, like Bill Clinton (46 years, 5 months, 1 day) and Barack Obama (47 years, 5 months, 16 days), will outlive their cabinets, but given that cabinets are quite large now and younger politicians are often appointed into these positions, outliving one's entire cabinet will require an exceptionally long lifespan.

I wondered whether any U.S. president outlived all of the members of his cabinet. Only one president has: Herbert Hoover, who was 90 years, 2 months, and 10 days old when he died on 20 October 1964. ('toot' continues)

At the recent passing of Jimmy Carter, who lived 100 years, 2 months, and 28 days, it was widely remarked that he was the longest-lived U.S. president. I was surprised to discover, however, that he had not outlived all of the members of his cabinet. Andrew Young, who served as Carter's U.N. ambassador, gave a homily at Carter's funeral. Young's successor as U.N. ambassador, Donald McHenry, is also living, as is Carter's Secretary of Labor, Ray Marshall.

Four years from now, it would likely be the case that this would be the experience of everyone 67 years, 5 months, and 14 days old or younger.

I wondered whether this might be some sort of record, but in fact it is not. At the end of Dwight D. Eisenhower's presidency on 20 January 1961, all folks younger than Eisenhower (who was 70 years, 3 months, and 5 days old on that day) had also never experienced a U.S. president who was younger than they were. I do not post on politics, and this series of posts should not be taken as political. There has been much talk about the age of recent U.S. presidents. Those around my age, for whom retirement is not that far away, were born after every U.S. president. The most recent birth of a U.S. president was that of Barack Obama, on 4 August 1961. That means that, as of today, all folks aged 63 years, 5 months, and 14 days (or younger) have never experienced having a U.S. president born after them. (cont.)

I regularly fill out the crossword puzzle in the newspaper. I prefer crossword answers to be standard words rather than proper nouns, texting abbreviations, or slang. So I was particularly dismayed this week at a puzzle with the following two clues and answers: 'Meeting, informally' (answer: SESH) and 'Strangers, slangily' (answer: RANDOS).

I have never heard anyone use these 'words'. I fear I have become like Mary on #Gogglebox having to endure Giles' repetition of slang. #crossword #slang

David Lodge's 'Campus Trilogy' was a hilarious send-up of academic life in the humanities in the final third of the 20th c: a world of visiting faculty, jet-setting conferences, and self-important theorising. #DavidLodge

I do not really understand why a butter dish should be shaped like a chicken, but many have been, especially in decades past. I inherited such a butter dish, made of glass, that belonged to my grandmother. I do not recall my grandmother using it, though she was very fond of glass, and she had many small, decorative cups and bowls made of both clear and coloured glass.

I had a dinner party last night and decided on a whim to get out and use the chicken butter dish, which amused my guests.

I lived on Comiston Road more than 30 years ago, and it was a busy road then. I would imagine that traffic volumes, and the occurrence of speeding motorists, have risen significantly in the intervening years.
