Ancestors

I do not post on politics, and this series of posts should not be taken as political. There has been much talk about the age of recent U.S. presidents. Those around my age, for whom retirement is not that far away, were born after every U.S. president. The most recent birth of a U.S. president was that of Barack Obama, on 4 August 1961. That means that, as of today, all folks aged 63 years, 5 months, and 14 days (or younger) have never experienced having a U.S. president born after them. (cont.)

Four years from now, it would likely be the case that this would be the experience of everyone 67 years, 5 months, and 14 days old or younger.

I wondered whether this might be some sort of record, but in fact it is not. At the end of Dwight D. Eisenhower's presidency on 20 January 1961, all folks younger than Eisenhower (who was 70 years, 3 months, and 5 days old on that day) had also never experienced a U.S. president who was younger than they were. At the recent passing of Jimmy Carter, who lived 100 years, 2 months, and 28 days, it was widely remarked that he was the longest-lived U.S. president. I was surprised to discover, however, that he had not outlived all of the members of his cabinet. Andrew Young, who served as Carter's U.N. ambassador, gave a homily at Carter's funeral. Young's successor as U.N. ambassador, Donald McHenry, is also living, as is Carter's Secretary of Labor, Ray Marshall.

I wondered whether any U.S. president outlived all of the members of his cabinet. Only one president has: Herbert Hoover, who was 90 years, 2 months, and 10 days old when he died on 20 October 1964. ('toot' continues)

It could be the case that later presidents who were relatively young when entering office, like Bill Clinton (46 years, 5 months, 1 day) and Barack Obama (47 years, 5 months, 16 days), will outlive their cabinets, but given that cabinets are quite large now and younger politicians are often appointed into these positions, outliving one's entire cabinet will require an exceptionally long lifespan.
