This is, in fact, the start of a gardening thread.
Here are the forecast temperatures through Wednesday.

From the experience of similarly cold temperatures around Christmas two years ago, I am fearful for my Japanese false holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki'). Two years ago, much of its foliage and stems were killed by these temperatures. The plants have grown back, though with a lower habit than before.

And so I have covered the Japanese false holly plants with crumpled newspaper and black plastic garbage bags, weighted down with stones, in the hope that keeping the plants covered and protected from any wind will allow the temperatures surrounding the plants to remain warm enough to prevent any damage.

@michaelmeckler ah that didn't show this last time haha. Might be add some shredded newspaper and a cover to insulate a bit more, burlap or something breathable that won't outright rot away may help as well and when it warms just turn the scraps over into the dirt.

@bryson Well, my hope is that I can pull this off later in the week. We should be back up to freezing on Thursday, with highs well above freezing next weekend. Japanese false holly can easily handle those temperatures.

@michaelmeckler
We wrap our citrus out front with christmas lights, then cover with fine chopped leaves, ag cloth, and clear plastic outerwrap.
We plug the christmas lights in when it gets below 20ish F / -7C.
So far they've survived 3F / -16C with minimal damage.
