Hi, sorry, I wasn’t alive during 19th century, was this how imperialism always worked? Issue an ultimatum to say your victim is a national security threat, so they gotta hand over stuffs to you otherwise you will make they pay dearly? Or was it just old-fashioned syndicate family blackmailing? Did I miss some lectures on how international diplomacy work in 21st century?

You know geopolitics work in mysterious ways: just yesterday I was talking about when Microsoft were put onto an anti-trust case in China as a way to negotiate for better pricing, now it is Google's turn to take the retaliation hit (again an anti-trust case, opened right after US added an additional 10% tariff).

Civ 7 comes out at a perfect moment: where US is trying to annex Canada by burning down their own trade routes, a scenario only viable in video game fantasy land.

In other words: patriot billionaires are a myth, even dictators know that.

One cool thing about living in China is you get to see if companies really have any principles above profit and survival much earlier than the western world:

CEOs in the west openly criticize government ONLY when they are fully protected by the law isn’t the backbone that you think it is.

All of them are prone to “pulling an IBM” when the real dictators arrive. We just observe these tactics much earlier than you do.

Censorship is in the last mile of AI, it is easily adjusted given proper regulations (so the actual problem is governance, not AI)

Bias is a foundational issue in AI and as far as I know, unsolved and probably unsolvable given training methods.

Bias in AI is by far a bigger deal than Censorship in AI. But no media are actively talking about it.

Ok, one good thing out of all the terrible news: The Sims 1 was re-released on Steam. Wondering if they have refreshed the rendering engine.

Question for #gamedev on here again:

Are there any good (preferably independent) source repo hosts for small gamedev team?

(Trying my best not to give GitHub any money, but unsure if there are viable alternatives.)

The real cost of dictatorship: no one dares to speak the truth, so disasters went from preventable to inevitable.

We will see more of these happening in the US, fortunately US still have some guardrails left to protect people from the worst outcomes.

The unfortunate part: the system will sustain a lot of cuts before a majority of people realize “enough is enough”.

Idle thought: there are 2 types of performance code, one optimizes workload from a single local user, the other optimizes workload from a million concurrent remote users.

Problem is people who are familiar with one type of performance issue often try to shoehorn solutions into another.

Hot take of the day: every single ad for AI products should be legally required to add a long addendum about their performance, accuracy, and liability - much like those high risk investment and health supplement ads.
