Sometimes during the day, I pause what I'm doing and, in my mind, I construct a Mastodon post, moulding it from the clay of my thoughts, chiseling away superfluous words. I do this until it's perfect.
And then I go back to whatever I was doing, not bothering to post it.
Just me?

Me on Jan 19:
Climate change hasn't really affected the UK.
God to Satan:
Do you wanna kick this fool, or should I?
HEADLINE on Jan 24:
Red weather warning for millions as storm batters the UK.
Please remind me to shut my bloody piehole in the future.

There's a medical TV drama called The Resident. It's not great; not bad, but not great.
4 weeks ago it bubbled to the top of my Netflix algo. Maybe I'll check it out, I thought.
The show ran for 6 seasons, making 80 hours of TV, around 3 and a half days' worth. And I've watched every single minute, dedicating every spare second to it.
This is a cry for help. Friends, family, followers, I need an intervention. Burn my remote control. Save me from this addiction. Thank you.

I'm grown up enough to accept that not everyone agrees with me. While I think that the philosophy of the Right is a bit cruel, I accept that it is defensible: maybe people would work harder with less govt support. Maybe the economy is like a pie that we must protect from immigrants.
What I cannot accept is the utter pettiness - destroying DEI, renaming mountains and gulfs, taunting LGBTQI+ citizens.
None of that is true conservatism. It's just evil.

No, I don't remember a word of what you said to me this morning. Sorry.
Yes, I do remember every word in Man Parrish's 1982 #hiphop classic, Boogie Down Bronx. Not sorry about that.

From The Guardian:
Biden said he was issuing blanket pardons to his brother James Biden, James’s wife, Sara Jones Biden; his younger sister, Valerie Biden Owens; Valerie’s husband, John T Owens; and his younger brother, Francis W Biden.
Dear America, these days, even your "good" guys do really bad things.

When I think of the great scientific achievements - putting a man on the moon, coming up with the covid vaccine - I think of it as something we've done. I think, "we put a man on the moon." Even tho I had fuck all to do with it.
Back when I lived in Nigeria, I would think, "they've put a man on the moon."
As an African, I felt outside of the world of mankind's successes - and I don't think it was just me.
I can't quite explain why.

Growing up, my mum showed love by doing everything for us, while my dad would occasionally take us out for isi ewu (translates to "goat head". Sounds gross, but is delicious) and Maltina.
Now I'm a parent, I find myself being a lot like my mum. I'm often too busy - cooking dinner, tidying rooms, ironing school uniforms - when I really should sometimes be more like my dad and invest my time in having fun with my kids.

I'm listening to an interview with Tom Fletcher, a UN diplomat.
Talking about the state of the world, he quoted Einstein:
"We don't know how World War 3 will be fought; but World War 4 will be fought with rocks."
But then he went on to say that he's still hopeful, saying:
"The Stone Age didn't end because we ran out of stones. I believe my grandkids will live longer, happier lives than my grandparents."

My son's sport of choice is athletics. He is always selected to represent his school and our town in regional competitions - where he, almost invariably, fails to win.
As a parent, I need to work harder on recognising that it's a real achievement to be judged one of the best athletes in our town and in his school - even if he's not the best in the whole region. I also need to recognise that the most important thing is that he's having fun and is happy.

I see a lot of posts from Mastodon veterans with 'helpful' tips for people new to the site. The stated intention is to help newbies find a home in Mastodon, and the main tip is always:
◾ Use alt text (or we will fucking run you out of town!)
Don't get me wrong; alt-text is good & is our culture here. But if you truly want to help, maybe start by suggesting fun accounts to follow, rather than make them too scared to post anything, lest they break a rule they don't yet understand?

Call me paranoid, but sometimes when I'm walking in a crowd I look around and think, statistically speaking at least 10% of these people willingly spent their hard-earned money to watch an Avatar movie in the cinema twice. And I shiver.

As a Brit, when I think of the effects of climate change, all of the worst disasters seem to be abroad - floods in Europe, wildfires in America, extreme heat in India, desertification and conflict in Africa - but nothing here. Am I forgetting something, or have we got off lightly thus far?

I've been a hip-hop fan for so long that I remember back in the early days when it was possible to complete hiphop. Yeah, all of it.
These days it'd take you 3 years just to listen to every Drake song.

I've spent a fair amount of the day today in rage, cos I read that Zuckerberg ordered that tampons be removed from the men's toilets at Meta.
I don't think I know any trans people personally. But I am aware that they exist, and that their existence does not impinge on mine.
So fuck Zuckerberg to fucking hell if this is true.
I've googled, but can only find the story on sites I don't recognise, so I'm holding onto hope that it's just internet fiction

I watched the 2024 movie, Civil War. And while I enjoyed it, I didn't like it.
I thought that it was unsure of what it wanted to be. Yes, the action set pieces were very well choreographed, but it was apparent that director Alex Garland set out to make a serious film.
OK, a serious movie about a US civil war. Perfect timing. So what is the movie trying to say? What n̶e̶w̶ angle is it bringing to the debate?
None, as far as I could tell.
And that's disappointing.
