Toot

Written by David Njoku on 2025-01-21 at 13:30

Growing up, my mum showed love by doing everything for us, while my dad would occasionally take us out for isi ewu (translates to "goat head". Sounds gross, but is delicious) and Maltina.

Now I'm a parent, I find myself being a lot like my mum. I'm often too busy - cooking dinner, tidying rooms, ironing school uniforms - when I really should sometimes be more like my dad and invest my time in having fun with my kids.

@davidnjoku Your dad could only get away with doing his dad thing because your mum was doing her mum thing.

You're doing good. This shit is hard.

@juliette 100%. The "fun" parent always has a boring parent somewhere doing all the heavy-lifting.

The lesson I'm trying to learn is that it's worth having a slightly untidy house if that means spending a bit more time with my kids.

@davidnjoku

Another approach, and one I try to adopt when I can, is to do the mundane things with the kids. Get them involved and have fun with it.

I feel that ticks off the 'get stuff done' box and the 'quality time' box whilst providing a chance for the kids to learn and appreciate the effort that goes in to running a home. Things take longer obviously so it's not always possible but it does seem to go a long way in fostering independence.

Still hafta make time for 'fun stuff' mind!
