Can we reconcile #degrowth’s urgent imperative to “live better with less” with the explosive possibilities for creativity bound up in the emergent mode of production I call the New Exuberance? And if so, how? I take on these questions in a new free dispatch on my Patreon, which I hope you enjoy. https://www.patreon.com/posts/dispatch-for-5-111400512

If you do get something out of that piece, and would like for me to be able to produce more like it, I'd love it if you supported my Patreon, at whatever tier you felt able to. https://www.patreon.com/adamgreenfield/membership

I'm experimenting with different ways of discussing ideas, so today I did something I've never done before — made a fully public post on my Patreon. It's about the inherent tension between the #degrowth imperative and a set of emerging design and production capabilities I'm calling the New Exuberance, and I hope you enjoy it. https://www.patreon.com/posts/dispatch-for-5-111400512

It occurs to me that there’s an interesting degree of overlap between the way Graeber/Wengrow portray the state in “The Dawn of Everything” and the way a cult is defined in that incredibly useful tool of old, the Advanced Bonewits Cult Danger Evaluation Frame. http://www.neopagan.net/ABCDEF.html

My question to you: do you honestly believe this is anything but the ordinary, unexceptional, indeed all but universal way in which capitalist markets operate? And if so, what evidence can you furnish in support of that belief? https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/article/2024/sep/04/grenfell-tower-fire-report-public-inquiry-key-players-cladding

His prosecution of the genocidal slaughter in Gaza aside (now that’s a hell of a clause), Netanyahu’s supremely arrogant sense of entitlement never fails to astonish me. What’s worse is that large sectors of the political community on both sides of the Atlantic go along with the imposture, as though he has some inherent right to the things our tax $ and £ pay for. It’s long past time we stop playing along, as societies. It’s long past time we stopped arming Israel.

I think it might just have political puissance, too, and reach some who might not otherwise have been reachable. Either way, I’m just not used to American political rhetoric being about anything.

“I’m not asking you to give up your skepticism, I’m just asking you to let that skepticism be your companion, and not your captor.” Whatever you may think of him or the political project in which he’s embedded, this framing from a speech given by Maryland’s governor Wes Moore last week is as close to a single-sentence encapsulation of wisdom as I have ever come across. I remain somewhat in awe of its concision and power.

I had another run-in with one of those smug, lawyerly, microtome-parsing “but it doesn’t meet the definition of genocide” people. Maybe it’s worth reiterating what I told him: if what Israel is (still, now!) doing in Gaza doesn’t meet the agreed UN definition of genocide then it’s the definition that’s wrong and needs to be changed. I thought that would be obvious, but maybe not.

Do people just not see that very soon, all of the products and services that prominently tout their “AI” features will look as mortifyingly dated and cringe as NFTs do now?

Possibly this is why I’m presently inclined toward projects that bear no such risk, like my long-threatened essay reading “Boogie Nights” against “The Big Lebowski.” #logjammin’

I don’t think it’s entirely unique to the present moment, but a signature contemporary fear is that of having your first glance at the news each morning and seeing something’s happened that renders all your work irrelevant.

This is orthogonal to, but obviously geared to, late capitalism’s voracious need for new markets and new regimes of extension.

One reason I think consensual #degrowth will be very difficult to achieve is the absolute combinatorial explosion of expressive possibility we can now see in virtually every domain of design, development and production, from beer to bikes to fashion.

(I have often noted, however, how haunted I am by the line “You hide your looks behind these scars.” I’ve got to suspect that’s part of the reason why.)

Not that I’m complaining – they’re mostly wonderful – but why do you think it is that, among all Glenn Danzig’s compositions, it’s “Hybrid Moments” that’s received dozens of gentle, wistfully-tinkling-piano covers? It isn’t as if the lyrics of “Hate Breeders” offer any starker a contrast.
