“I’m not asking you to give up your skepticism, I’m just asking you to let that skepticism be your companion, and not your captor.” Whatever you may think of him or the political project in which he’s embedded, this framing from a speech given by Maryland’s governor Wes Moore last week is as close to a single-sentence encapsulation of wisdom as I have ever come across. I remain somewhat in awe of its concision and power.

I think it might just have political puissance, too, and reach some who might not otherwise have been reachable. Either way, I’m just not used to American political rhetoric being about anything.
