Some conference policies don't let the same people head up a session/event in consecutive years - sounds great to prevent the same high-profile folks from dominating the schedule - but doesn't this end up with people using their friend network to get events in to the conference?
Asking because it seems like (size of friend network) is going to be highly correlated with (high-profile).

I learned about and watched Polite Society (2023) yesterday, and it was a blast!
one-line summary from wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polite_Society_(film)
"a feminist martial arts action/comedy film focussing on two privately educated British-Pakistani sisters in London"

"Currently, ResearchHub takes a 7% cut of any ResearchCoin transactions on the site"
So the platform that pays you crypto to peer-review takes a cut. Sound like company scrip to anyone else?

I looked up "hot rodent man" because of Puzzmo's Friday crossword... at least it is a different kind of cultural context that I'm missing for crossword clues. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

WOW, Harvard Library has now suspended students and faculty for engaging in silent "study-in" protests.
https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2024/10/25/faculty-members-suspended-harvard-library/
I feel terrible for the protestors, but also the library workers who weren't involved in the decisions but have to deal with the fallout that further divides the library from its users.

I feel like it really depends on what "exclusion" entails. Because in the form of excluding from jobs or classes, well yeah, we already aren't allowed to do that just on the basis of beliefs or identity, except where those might conflict with the execution of the job or the disruption to the class.
Or in the meaning of who one is allowed to socialize with, Penn doesn't get to tell you who is in your social circle.

which could mean a student group that is against all state-sponsored violence cannot kick out a student who doesn't agree??

Has there been any research on modeling factors and credentials for first faculty positions?
I'm specifically wondering if there are any quantifiable metrics for who ends up doing postdocs and for how long because they don't get as much benefit of the doubt for faculty positions as others (and the obvious candidate reasons of race/sex/prestige of mentorship).
