Have I said how much I love #ArchiveBox? If you have some disk space to spare and you're not afraid of running a docker compose file, you can run your own backup #WaybackMachine on your own infrastructure/in your own #homelab. I've got it running on my Mac Mini with an external SSD.

The #InternetArchive is a true international treasure but they're not invulnerable, and archivists know that Lots Of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe!

Question for the #notmuch experts: would storing my Maildirs and notmuch index on an external #SSD attached to my #MacMini work, or is that a terrible idea?

Finally published my #IndieWebCarnival post on #friction in the #IndieWeb and #fediverse. Talk about self-imposed friction!

[#]Email like it's the 2000s again? I am seriously considering adopting #neomutt alongside #offlineimap and #notmuch to help me deal with thousands of emails. I was a big fan of #mutt back in the day, until I started having to deal with HTML email (ugh) on a daily basis at work. I'll probably still use #MailMate when necessary for sending fancy emails, but sorting, filing, and archiving email is so much faster on the #commandline and #terminal.

Postponed my #IndieWebCarnival post again because this one feels more important.

And to be clear, collaboration doesn’t require slapping on an armband and goose-stepping behind a demagogue. Nice people made the best Nazis, as Naomi Shulman wrote eight years ago:
My mother was born in Munich in 1934, and spent her childhood in Nazi Germany surrounded by nice people who refused to make waves. When things got ugly, the people my mother lived alongside chose not to focus on “politics,” instead busying themselves with happier things. They were lovely, kind people who turned their heads as their neighbors were dragged away.

(FWIW I've never been a customer of either micro.blog or omg.lol, mainly because I'm a masochist who prefers to build my website in Vim and the command line. But if friends now ask me for recommendations on newbie-friendly ways to get on the #IndieWeb, I'm not inclined to recommend a service whose owner doesn't appear to be listening to his customers who are trans* or have trans* family members.)

Via @jayeless, an analysis of this week's tempest in the #IndieWeb. @chipotle's angle helped me see why I was initially taken aback by the tone of some of @adam's posts. I've always skewed 'genteel' and it's taken me nearly a lifetime to realise that's because I'd been domesticated by the colonisers. I'm probably always going to have that unconscious filter in front of me so I'm glad there are people like Adam who will be rude and shouty on behalf of his customers and community members who don't share his privilege.

I've been a happy #NearlyFreeSpeech customer for years. Their core product is supercharged DIY shared web hosting for tinkerers who don't need the power of a complete server or virtual machine. They're committed to defending genuine free speech, not the corrupted variant touted by hate groups.

https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/help/abuse

However... they are just a small company based in the USA and bound by its laws. I expect they don't have the funds for expensive lawyers, let alone 'donations' to presidential inaugurations. I don't want to move hosts, but maybe I do need to think of worst-case scenarios. So, any recommendations for hacker-friendly web hosting that's not located in an authoritarian jurisdiction?

Another thread with tips for newcomers. I keep forgetting that the lack of an 'algorithm' is what makes this place special (and possibly bewildering).

I just learned about @fluconf and love the name and idea. Even before #covid, I was not a fan of the conference flu phenomenon.

Having said that, I hope everyone at #EverythingOpen has a great time and stays healthy. Keep your mask on!

I know this hasn't always been true, but I really feel that this time round, old #fediverse hands are being friendly and helpful when welcoming newcomers who have been cast adrift from their old platforms. I don't see as much of the snark and hostility that I remember from earlier migrations.

I stopped using Instagram years ago and the random-short-video-stream pattern doesn't work for me, so I've started collecting tips by people who understand these formats at https://www.claudinec.net/library/fediverse/

I opened my @fastmail account um... a year or two before Gmail launched, I think. I've flirted with a few email providers including the one that we're all talking about today, but Fastmail is solid and reliable and I think genuinely not evil. They're based in Melbourne, which I think is cool, but yes, that means we're in a #FiveEyes country, which may be a deal-breaker for some.

Wow, Facebook really make it difficult to log out of their mobile apps. No matter, I'm deleting those apps as well as my account. Might block facebook.com and instagram.com at the DNS level just to be sure. (I'm already blocking threads.net.)

[#]Severance is one of those shows I haven't returned to because I couldn't handle the dystopia. This detail is neat though.
