It's so nice to find a contractor that

shows up on time

has modern tools (you know, we have lasers, you don't need to eyeball it any more)

vacuums after every single drilling

says things like "yeah but I'll want to do it properly the first time"

has an opinion on aesthetics

And there is a reason why I hand-grind coffee beans to make a cup of coffee to that sort of a contractor

"Only if you are seriously interested should you make the considerable investment in an editor/assembler."

"Economics frequently dictate the choice of an assembler."

In the meantime, use pen and paper.

An interesting #Retrobrighting thread. I have a few items waiting for treatment and I am going to try a dry method, because I don't want a box full of harmful chemicals around. I am going to try a powerful grow light with UV and a foil lined box with items raised on transparent disposable cups. Hoping to start this experiment at some point under a #DryRetrobrighting hashtag.

One of the subsea communications cable-laying vessels in Finland is called Telepaatti. (Picture in the link.)

”Paatti” is a colloquialism for a boat. (If you squint, it’s the same word.)

”Telepaatti” means a telepath.

This is a great visual article from The Economist for a slow morning (paywall) https://www.economist.com/interactive/christmas-specials/2024/12/21/the-chart-of-everything

If you’ve been sitting on the fence for that non-EU-produced retro cart or another niche project, maybe good to realise that from tomorrow you may need to use a remailing service to get one delivered to the EU.

Ok, there is this thing on eBay https://www.ebay.com/itm/205039220115. It’s a #C64 data storage device that uses ”Microwafers”, some sort of tape cartridge. There’s a review on https://archive.org/details/MC_microcomputer-044/page/n105?view=theater. Who made these Microwafers? I have never seen one. #retrocomputing

The difference of being a Finnish or West German fourth-grader in 1984?

This hypothetical German fourth-grader had articles like this that showed how to make #C64 BASIC run faster: https://www.64er-magazin.de/8412/basic.html

The Finnish fourth-grader learned that the only copy of our local library’s Programmer’s Reference Guide had been stolen, and had no money to buy one.

I think this is not just Finland, though.

I was once riding the London underground and the carriage had a perfectly TfL-styled sticker that said

No Eye Contact

Penalty £50

I looked at the sign, and then a young student that was standing across the aisle. We had eye contact for 25 ms and they turned their eyes away.

The kid was attending a drama class and they played the game of ”Finnish people at a bus stop”.

Everyone stands in a circle facing inward, and chooses someone else at random. Then they gaze at the other person’s shoes. At a signal, everyone looks up, and if they find themselves in eye contact with the other person, both are dropped from the game.

But of course, there is still hope. It can come from the EU (and Britain):

First, Europe is still a large trade partner. Like the GDPR is de facto changing how non-EU companies work, the optimist in me says that climate action can also be exported to some extent via the Brussels effect. It's not enough but it'd be stupid not to use that card.

The second point is (if possible) even darker and I'm not even an armchair general, but maybe the French and British nuclear stockpiles would benefit from more tactical capabilities to offer a threat of a graduated, more ambiguous (and hence more readily available to NATO) response. Maybe.
