Another member of the Micro.blog team told me that Manton would never talk about such “weighty” issues in an off-hand way.

Weighty? Off-hand? How hard is it to just come out and say whether you have a problem with LGBTQ+ people or not?

Still he tries to distract from the real issues, distorting the narrative, claiming that this is all about rocketships because he doesn’t want to acknowledge the bigotry.

I hope everyone is paying close attention.

I think the most telling aspect of my disagreement with Manton is the sheer incongruity of sides.

I’ve presented a clear outline of real, actual problems, along with an explanation of why they are problems, and I’ve brought receipts.

All Manton has done is tell me that I’m wrong. He’s brought absolutely nothing of merit to the discussion and hasn’t once addressed anything of substance.

I gave him a chance to clarify his personal stance on LGBTQ+ people. In response, he muted me.

From one of my emails to Manton yesterday:

“When I screw up, I own it. If I do something that warrants criticism, I welcome it. I learn from it. I grow as a person, I change, and I become something better than I was before.”

I was raised to know that if I screwed up, I would be held accountable. But these days, the playbook is to dodge it at all costs.

What a shame, since accountability builds trust.

If you need an amazing IndieWeb cross-posting service that’s run by an LGBTQ+ ally and all-around amazing person, I highly recommend EchoFeed by @robb. https://echofeed.app

When asked if he personally supports LGBTQ+ people, his answer was that Micro.blog put a pride flag on their Discovery page.

When asked how he justifies having a known bigot being on the Micro.blog team, he mutes me.

But, yeah, social media is the problem.

I hope everyone is paying attention. This guy is a master of deflection. Zero personal responsibility, zero accountability, zero desire to own his decisions.

Don’t fall for it.

I’ve had a few people reach out to me seeking guidance with moving away from Micro.blog in light of their challenges.

I don’t want to personally profit from anyone’s choice to leave a hostile provider. Also, the blogging tool on omg.lol is pretty awful. 😅

So, within the next couple of weeks, I’ll be hosting a free live workshop that will guide you through attaining the true IndieWeb vision of fully taking back your online presence. Stay tuned for details!

Yep, this tracks. Instead of saying where he stands on LGBTQ+ issues (not Micro.blog, but Manton himself), and in lieu of explaining his decision to retain Vincent Ritter despite his anti-LGBTQ+ record, he opts to hide and hope it all goes away.

Manton always somehow viewed us as “competing”, but I never saw it that way. Micro.blog is a superior blogging tool, period.

But where community is concerned, man, what a trainwreck over there. And it comes from the top.

🏳️‍🌈 I am a proud LGBTQ+ ally, and I routinely put my allyship into action. For me, it’s not just a hashtag or a label. It’s a reflection of the absolute need for people to support one another, especially now, in this timeline.

Look for the allies. But more importantly, look for the allies who will stand up for you.

Because I have nothing to hide, I’ve published my side of the email thread that Manton referenced: https://cdn.cache.lol/pdf/A_note_from_the_establishment.pdf

You can be the judge as to whether any of what I had to say constituted a “personal attack” or if it “went off the rails”. You’ll only see that I really don’t have a lot of patience for people with abhorrent views, I don’t like when people try to silence me, and I’ll stick up for myself when I think I’m right.

I realize that Manton is an indie blogging hero to a lot of people. And I know that criticism of people’s heroes often doesn’t go well. But I don’t care, because I’m tired of this bullshit. I’m tired of the expectation that we’ll all make excuses for certain people just because they’re considered important or significant in some context.

This is why I don’t like taking these kinds of things to email (but Manton made a special point to say that he does). There’s no accountability in a private ending to a public discussion.

But his whining about being “attacked” following this exchange is classic DARVO behavior. It’s the same thing that Vincent Ritter did last year after being called out on his bullshit, too. Same tactics, same playbook.

Don’t fall for this warping of the narrative. Manton stepped into my posts earlier, when I was talking about something about which I care deeply, to repeatedly tell me how I was wrong to feel a certain way.

When that didn’t go well, he emailed me to continue his gaslighting privately. I responded to each of his messages, explaining my position.

I did not “attack” him, but I did tell him some things that he probably didn’t want to hear.

My tolerance for anyone who’s going to argue with me on this is absolutely nonexistent. This is a Nazi-free corner of the internet, and I’m not going to entertain any attempt to excuse this behavior, let alone put up with people who actively support it.

Rather than dismiss legitimate criticism with pithy labels, why not discuss the very real issues that form the basis of the criticism? I’m ready to have a conversation with anyone, at any time, about how holding certain views can be harmful and hurtful to people, and about how fostering inclusive views is better for everyone on the open web.

But that would mean having to agree that the bad behavior happened, or that it’s even bad in the first place.

Since it was a subtweet, I might as well respond:

“Reminder that when you’re angry, lashing out at people who are not the problem is counterproductive.”

I pointed to a person who is unsympathetic toward LGBTQ+ people and who idolizes Elon. People like that are the problem.

“I’m done with the outrage machine. It’s performative.”

Looks like “performative” is the new way to dismiss valid criticism when it’s not convenient.

Beware those who equate speaking out against fascism with “virtue signaling”. Their virtues are often not in alignment with yours.

People get mad at me when I post about things like this. Nobody likes to be reminded that they’re financially supporting someone who’s enthusiastic about fascism.

I don’t care any more. After what we collectively experienced yesterday, I won’t be quiet about it any longer.

And I think we all know where Vincent stands on one particular executive order that was just signed.

This is a time to pay close attention to everyone and everything. This is a time to carefully consider who and what you’re supporting.

Musk performed multiple Nazi salutes yesterday. Bezos is morally bankrupt. Both are billionaires who will burn down this country if it earns them another buck.

I’m done being quiet about people who pretend to care about IndieWeb principles. How do you reconcile wanting to own your own online identity while licking Musk’s boots on his own platform?
