Don’t fall for this warping of the narrative. Manton stepped into my posts earlier, when I was talking about something about which I care deeply, to repeatedly tell me how I was wrong to feel a certain way.

When that didn’t go well, he emailed me to continue his gaslighting privately. I responded to each of his messages, explaining my position.

I did not “attack” him, but I did tell him some things that he probably didn’t want to hear.

This is why I don’t like taking these kinds of things to email (but Manton made a special point to say that he does). There’s no accountability in a private ending to a public discussion.

But his whining about being “attacked” following this exchange is classic DARVO behavior. It’s the same thing that Vincent Ritter did last year after being called out on his bullshit, too. Same tactics, same playbook.

I realize that Manton is an indie blogging hero to a lot of people. And I know that criticism of people’s heroes often doesn’t go well. But I don’t care, because I’m tired of this bullshit. I’m tired of the expectation that we’ll all make excuses for certain people just because they’re considered important or significant in some context.

You can be the judge as to whether any of what I had to say constituted a “personal attack” or if it “went off the rails”. You’ll only see that I really don’t have a lot of patience for people with abhorrent views, I don’t like when people try to silence me, and I’ll stick up for myself when I think I’m right.

@adam super weird exchange that shouldn't have been necessary let alone done in private after him subposting about you all day like directly between his replies lol but I agree with you. This week has been incomprehensible. Everyone should be accountable if they can stomach supporting Trump, Musk or even Zuckerberg. Either they are ignorant, delusional or complicit and I'm NOT ok with either anymore. Part of me knows progress can't be made while everyone is so divided. Call it a collective action problem or hypernormalization; whatever, that doesn't make this the time for rolling over and playing dead. Like you said people are hurting right now. People lucky enough to not feel any impact need to stand up for those who may not feel safe to speak out. Trump's writing EOs that don't make sense and shouldn't be possible and he will keep talking about them as if they are real till people believe him. I don't want to be the 51st state! My heart hurts for so many people Trump is targetting

@adam I remember when this originally happened. You did not jump in and insult the individual. Instead you asked them to pause, listen and understand—to use it as an opportunity to grow as a person.

That didn’t happen and you were right to call it out.

At the time I felt that the individual needed more time to introspect. Weeks and months have passed now.

Calling it out again may make it uncomfortable for a few others, but someone’s comfort shouldn’t be at the expense of others’ suffering.
