Fun when debugging multiple concurrency issues in the same c++ code: you never know which one you'll get this time so you're just kind of inching forward on all of them one compile/run cycle at a time.

Feel like I'm gonna be spending a lot of time saying this again for the indefinite future:

Trans people are not a distraction.

Also castling is so friggin weird in chess 960 (which I'd rather play just because I can think of few things less appealing than learning a bunch of pre-planned openings).

I highly recommend not opening Disney+ for the next day or so if you don't want to think about what's happing today (Monday) in politics.

Sometimes I blunder into a clutch checkmate at the end of a game I've been losing the whole time somehow though?

I was playing black against stockfish level 1 (am newb) and the bot evaluation graph had me losing badly until the very end. And I only had 4 seconds of the 10 minute timer left while stockfish had almost 7 minutes lol. I didn't even realize this was check when I played it.

The first convenience store's building has been a gravel lot for the last couple years now. Not even a parking lot. Just an empty fenced off gravel lot.

I stg neighborhoods I move to have a habit of getting less walkable after I move into them.

Oh. Cool. The other convenience store in walking distance of my house closed and now there are none. :/

At least in this case apparently the building owner wants to make sure something similar takes its place.

I am so very very bad at seeing how to turn a chess endgame into a checkmate. :/

Is it weird that Harley Quinn's season premiere this week was more exciting to me than Severance's?

You know, I'm just now realizing that going full remote at work kinda coincided with me falling off a bunch of online social spaces that were high-social interaction. Particularly twitch, both as a streamer and a viewer.

Maybe it just started feeling too much like work?

Of course, the pandemic is also both a catalyst and confounding factor here so it's hard to draw a really strong conclusion.

The sad sad irony of having a great skirt with pockets that you love but no longer fits quite right so if you actually use them the skirt will fall off.

And they no longer make this particular skirt so you're stuck with only the one.

(Yes, I should get it tailored, but I still wish I could buy a couple more :( )

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_bike

Huh, TIL about balance bikes, which are bikes without peddles that are allegedly a lot better for kids to learn on than trikes or training wheels. Definitely never saw these when I was a kid.

The way they're better makes a lot of sense but still seems very counterintuitive.

Principles like "innocent until proven guilty" and "freedom of speech" are important not just because they're somehow inherently "good," but because they are specifically useful tools to prevent abuses of power.

This is why we apply them to governments and their arms specifically, because in the way our society is structured they are nominally at the top of the power hierarchy. The government can imprison or even kill you. It can take away your livelihood or your right to vote. These are unique powers governments have.

So, when looking at whether and how to apply these principles to a situation, it's important to look at the power dynamics involved!

When a government, a major corporation, or a rich and influential person accuses someone else of something, they hold immense power to make that person's life miserable. They may even be able to leverage state power against them, even if they don't directly hold such power! And so it's important to hold them to a very high standard.

But the other way around? When a powerless person accuses a powerful entity of something? It doesn't work the same way, and it's important to recognize that.
