@kev It’s essential to distinguish between “Y shouldn’t matter” and “Y doesn’t matter”. This is the difference between — for example — being non-racist (“I don’t see race”) and being anti-racist (“I see and fight racism”).
It is relevant that the author is — to use his own description — a “white cis male”, because anyone who doesn’t have these default characteristics knows from experience that being a unique individual doesn’t protect us from being judged by a single aspect of our identity.
