@neil A decent Spotify alternative for those who want a music streaming service is Qobuz. (Happy customer only here.) As far as I've been able to find they actually pay artists quite decently for streaming (not huge amounts, but toward the high end for streaming and far more than Spotify) and they let you buy DRM-free full-quality downloads of mainstream music.
I'm pretty sure they have a one-month no-strings free trial, so are easy to try out with minimal risk if available in one's region.
