When I read his "Machines of Loving Grace" I was shocked at the rhetoric and reasoning: "I am not going to sell sci fi and stay realistic and we'll have brains in boxes that advance science and techno massively within a tiny amount of time and revolutionize medicine". Science and technology are civilization wide projects and even hypothetical very smart brains in boxes aren't going to magically do sci fi.
And I am someone who can appreciate LLMs even with all their limitations.
