It also got me started on Arthur Machen, a hole in my education. So far I've enjoyed "N", the short story with the premise for Moore's novel, and been mildly annoyed by "The Great God Pan," where unspeakable horrors are hinted at for 62 pages, but the real #horror lay in a casual remark on page four. It's a commonplace these days that Frankenstein actually is the name of the monster, but the tormented Victor is a saint of research ethics compared with Machen's unruffled Dr Raymond.
