Finished Stephen King’s new short story collection /You Like It Darker/ (2024), which, unlike the Leonard Cohen album it alludes to, is not published from beyond the grave. The median age of King’s protagonists does rise inexorably, but he’s still going strong.
There are ghosts and extraterrestrials; there are terrible true dreams, and crime, and a novella-length mix of both. /Cujo/ fans may find a bit of closure next to Duma Key, of all places. 1/2

Funny. It also got me started on Arthur Machen, a hole in my education. So far I've enjoyed "N", the short story with the premise for Moore's novel, and been mildly annoyed by "The Great God Pan," where unspeakable horrors are hinted at for 62 pages, but the real #horror lay in a casual remark on page four. It's a commonplace these days that Frankenstein actually is the name of the monster, but the tormented Victor is a saint of research ethics compared with Machen's unruffled Dr Raymond.

Finished Alan Moore's /The Great When/ (2024), a #weird novel of post-WW II London and the superior London it veils. Moore puts the "urban" in #urban #fantasy, not unlike N.K. Jemisin's /Great Cities/ duology, but builds on Machen rather than Lovecraft. Good, satirical writing and some lovely characters; I don't really feel I got a handle on the other London, but then it's meant to be too Dadaist to grasp and remain sane. A trilogy is promised, and I'm here for it. #books #sff
