I've said this before, but: one of the things I like about being an independent consultant is that there's no illusion about the relationship between me and my clients. I sell them my time and expertise. This is fundamentally the same as the labor relationship of employment, but no one is blowing smoke up anyone's skirt about "loyalty" or "family" or whatever.
