I think I’m at the point where it makes sense to build a UI. The choices I am considering:

iOS app using Kotlin:

Pros

• Learning Kotlin anyway

• Easier camera access

• No risk of JavaScript

• Some elements could be shared with an Android version

Cons

• Kotlin is not a language I like.

• More restricted user base

• Not the platform’s standard language and framework

• More complex to publish

iOS app in Swift:

I’m not learning another language while already working on getting proficient with two. Not viable.

iOS app in Rust:

Nothing looks mature, requires a lot of iOS platform knowledge I don’t have. Not viable.

Rust web application with client side WASM:

Pros

• Can share code with backend for contracts

• Wider device support

• Simpler deployment with no gatekeeper

Cons

• Lot of pieces in various states of maturity

• CSS and I are not friends

• Probable JavaScript

• I do not want nodeJS in my life. At all.

A desktop app is not viable, a primary use case of this system is knowing what model railroad gear I already have when I’m in a store. I won’t be whipping out the laptop.
