Facebook Messenger vs Rednote: A Side-by-side Comparison

Things the "good, trustworthy, red-blooded American company" Facebook Messenger collects:

• Health & Fitness data (your age, height, weight, etc)

• Financial data (how many credit cards you have, how much debt, how many open bank accounts)

• Contact Info (your name, phone number, email address, spouse, etc, plus the same info on every contact in your phone book

• User Content (your photos, your documents, etc)

• Diagnostics (what kind of device you're using, your MAC address, your IP address, and the same on every device that's on the WiFi network you're accessing

• Purchase history (What you bought, when, and how you paid for it)

• Location (your exact GPS location within 5ft or less)

• Search History (your entire search history. Yes this includes "private" searches.)

• Identifiers (your driver's licence, SSN, and other personal IDs)

• Sensitive info (anything you specifically marked private)

• Other data (literally anything you have in any folder on your device, or in the cloud, anywhere.)

In general, Facebook Messenger collects this data in the background without you knowing or acknowledging it. It will notice that you are connected to a WiFi and immediately begin searching out through the network for information in these categories on all connected devices.

Things the "scary, bad, communist Chinese company" Redbook collects:

• Purchase info (things you bought in the app)

• Search history (things you searched for in the app)

• Contacts (your contact list - if you give consent first)

• Identifiers (your phone number and birthdate that you sign up with)

Redbook (Xiaohongshu) in general allows you to choose how much information you share, and when. Even when uploading pictures to the app, it will ask you each time how much access you want to give it to your device, and specifically ask for consent to upload each image you chose.
