@niomi Many semi-private instances only want to roughly know who's on the instance and avoid spam accounts. Often you don't need a good reason but can just say hello I'd like to join.
But I suppose when you chose the instance you had some reason for it, so just tell it. What did you like about their instance and why do you think it is a good home for you?
And if they are complicated about that, just try another instance that seems more open to new users or choose one with open registration.
