Until the GPU swap, my ATI 580 was fine with BG3 & Disco Elysium on Euripides with Linux. Dragon Age: Origins also appeared to run fine, but the modding situation is developing. I should be able to install those mods manually. I’ve done it before, when the game was newer and no mod managers yet. however, if there’s a skill issue, Windows may be necessary to get my 2010s games back as I remember them.

My yearly “frivolous” purchase, as frivolous as I dare, computer parts. In 2024, I got my partner (who likes more demanding games) 3060 and myself his hand-me-down 1070. (not TI– I’ve been confused about that)

My #1070 swap has not gone the greatest. I have different errors in Windows and Linux, but each of them show strange graphics glitches. BG3 cannot run at all in Linux anymore. as I’ve run through basic troubleshooting ideas. I probably need to re-install all my operating systems to move forward with my gaming goals. (which involves a lot of modding)

I am gathering from Protondb: do not expect Dragon Age: Veilguard to run on Linux without at least a 3060.

In its first year, switch to Linux on the desktop is nearly a complete success! Windows is increasingly slow and abrasive to use. Cheap VPNs do not run well on Linux, probably to its credit, but some of my piracy must run from Windows 10.

Beginning of year two, I did have bigger issues. I am used to deb and found flatpak difficult, but am learning to use flatseal. Signal’s flatpak fucked itself, though no fault of my own. The fix was not graceful. Without actively using Windows 11 (it sucks) on my laptop, I’d lose data. Signal community does not care to hand-hold Linux users who kinda suck at this.

I have been procrastinating installing #Linux on the laptop. Lenovo does not make it easy on me. There is a path forward, but it’s inconvenient, so I haven’t done it yet. Getting Linux on the laptop too will help me become more productive while mobile in the coming years.

me: it's not for protest sake. we need to build up like 40 regulars to even begin to protest creative & risky territories. unless, of course, propagandizing arrests are the point of the action. is anyone up for that?

ableists: we should stop drugging ADHD kids & students just for being different

me: ok, you know what's better for me than ADHD drugs actually, zoom meetings & auto captions. also uncomfortable clothing to comply with dress codes are incredibly distracting. you should allow the kids to stim, draw, play with their hands, while they are listen, and do not demand they stare at you or put them on the spot with random shit tests. and a lot of research shows that schools start too early which causes too much sleep deprivation, this is harmful not only to grades but to health outcomes over their lifetime. much of the curriculum is built on this "memory bank" idea which is some Victorian shit that has been thoroughly discredited, spending too much time on route memorization for weak subjects hurts actually. there is also a lot of evidence that Bush era's No Child Left Behind is a complete disaster--

ableists: no not like that we meant train the kids with carrots and sticks like a dog

me: you were already doing that to all the kids. that doesn't work on a lot of NDs, and can cause more problems like PDA. I'm not even convinced it's good for the NTs either

ableists: well your parents did it wrong obviously

but it's very difficult to ask for money and risk investigating conversations when I really need and would accept the right job. Mutual aid has made it easier to beg for money, but no easier to beg for a job lead with more urgency and explain their typical suggestions are not getting me anywhere. I've gone through this with social workers, as well, although the social workers have the same ideas as anyone (they are better at submitting medicaid papers than me, though, thanks for that)

I'm not asking for much out of a job, I just cannot commute there and that seems to be asking for everything. genuinely crazymaking how well-meaning people behave like this job is within reach. anyway. I don't know where to put the temperature of my begging, my whole cassandra complex is worried about the long-term potential for me and my loved ones to be casualties of capitalism. as I see it now, I will be taking actual constitution damage once the dividends of the boomer's economy run dry for me. but I continue to refine the acts of subsisting on less and less. I have actually been living the depression era. I'm good at it.

I spend 70% of the money I have on housing. the only reason I can even try to afford this is because insurance companies will do anything to avoid fixing a roof. there's mold in the bathroom now. I keep saying this. we don't have to leave very soon, but we can't stay here forever just because it's so cheap. I never thought I'd hold out this long. but again, nice to know I'm good at something.

if you are the kind of person who chooses employees, are someone who can pick who you want to work with, or have some influence over one who does, I desperately need an actual remote job. if you by any chance read this and have a follow up suggestion chat GPT is capable of producing, don't, I will save it for the next social worker. so at least the full depths of this failure will be documented if it doesn't turn around. for some future purpose I don't even know yet but, uh!!!, for what purpose should I struggle if not to leave a paper trail??!?!?!?! :fediverso:

I don't like to assume how people feel, because I am resentful when others assume wrongly about my feelings. However it's becoming increasingly harder to not operate under the assumption of projection, the wrong assumption about my feelings are their feelings.

[#]Narcissism gets its name from a Greek myth about a guy who is only attracted to his own reflection. It's a metaphor for total detachment from others.

What Narcissus doesn't do is consciously compare others to himself and decide they're inadequate. He only considers himself, there is no comparison. He can't look down on others because he doesn't really see them.

He rejects those who are interested in him. but what he doesn't do is solicit admiration, manipulate, take advantage, or retaliate with spite when denied. He also has a job, he's a hunter, and he does that too. His flaw is not vanity, nor the active abuse of others, it's indifference. He's really who Don Draper pretends to be in Mad Men-- "I don't think of you at all."

However, most people who do say things like that (including Don) are lying. So we have a pop culture concept of narcissistic personalities (or disorders) whose resemblance to the namesake of NPD is a lie.

These narcissistic characters cannot gaze into their own reflection as Narcissus does. Don cannot be indifferent because his fundamental difference from Narcissus. Don is so unable to even glance in the direction of his own reflection that he's pathologically dependent on his access to the gaze of others. He must refract image of his self through the subjectivity of others, the only way he can perceive himself at all.

The DSM's narcissistic personality disorder is neither of those things (arguably more one than the other) but appeals to it as an authority are totally unhelpful. Personality disorders, including borderline and narcissistic, have been subject to much meta-analysis revealing prejudices in how they are applied.

EG presenting the same symptoms, women and gay men are much more likely to get borderline compared to men of more normative sexuality. Borderline is also rebranded stuff of Freud, old timey hysteria.

I think it would be better not to dx personality disorders at all. That doesn't mean these concepts are totally unhelpful, but it's so not appropriate method for clinical/medical authority. Fuck the DSM and leave personality stuff to talk therapy, analysis, or the polytheistic priests of Greece

this is sad, but, the migration of some gay video game influences to bluesky seems to be positively effecting discussion of Dragon Age lore. the past and fired employees who made these decisions are sharing about difficult questions, such as writing a divergent plot. (seems like Gaider doesn't think it's plausible) since Gamergate this niche internet argument I used to piss away hours has now become drastically more politically loud.

what I want from bluesky is the reflection on how to write stories with lots of different alternative endings. like older releases, there is never a failure to mention telemetry data. this time again about how nearly no one chooses most of those endings.

not that long ago, these same conversations over the last games were like: the telemetry data is all the players are straight men. you people in this echo chamber think you are loud but you have the options you deserve which is reflected in empirical data.

divergent stories can be done, but ex-writers say there are not enough resources. EA does not want to pay for the writers to make it possible for a Bioware game. they want to pump out FIFAs and barely keep the lights on for CRPGs. (thank the maker for Larian 🙏)

today reactionary men online think a nonbinary video game character in Dragon Age is also an ugly cow. but Taash is nonbinary, in those terms. this is now news brought to me by boomers.

Dorian in DAI never said he was gay. there are two games with all pansexual characters, none say the word pansexual. is there a reason this has happened for nonbinary? has EA finally decided we're their audience now?? feels bad, man

bluesky will surely become contaminated because becoming spam is the destination of all communications under capitalism, but at least the migration to bluesky was nicely timed to get more lore on these games

[#]Columbus #Ohio police plan specialized unit as Memphis police disbands theirs, abridged/arranged from https://archive.ph/2Qffl

Last year, Columbus sharply declined in most violent crime, including a 32% decline in homicides and a 16% decline in felonious assaults.

Violent crime in Columbus is down and Memphis police have disbanded their specialized crime unit in the wake of the fatal police beating of Tyre Nichols. But #ColumbusDivisionOfPolice is set to create a new specialized unit of officers to target gang activity, similar to a previous CPD unit called "Safe Streets" but referred to on the streets as "Jump Out Boys." That unit had a complex history in the community, including the fatal shooting of Henry Green in 2016.

Columbus police currently has a squad of detectives focused on developing information about gang activity in the city. But the new squad, which is likely to have only a handful of officers when it begins operation, will supposedly be focused on enforcement versus intelligence gathering.

Officers from Columbus train with officers in the Detroit Police Department, where Chief Elaine Bryant and First Assistant Chief LaShanna Potts worked before coming to Columbus.

"The Columbus Division of Police understands and shares concerns surrounding specialized units lacking oversight," wrote Potts, who did not address in her statement whether the unit members would wear body cameras.

Ralph Carter, a long-time Linden* resident who founded the nonprofit We Are Linden, said he was not approached about the proposed new gang unit and felt the community should have input before it hits the streets.

He said past jump-out squads was seen "in cahoots" with local drug dealers and not following the law:

Carter: Some of them were accused (by community members) of planting items on drug dealers, trumping up charges on them. You got excessive abuse from the police.
If (the planned special unit) is going to happen, ...they need to wear something bright that says police. It cannot be how it was, plain clothes jumping out with a bunch of guys in hoodies and with tactical gear. Just riding around the neighborhood, jumping out on kids, now we’re going to have even more of a nightmare.

He fears the unit will lead to unnecessary tragedy, like what was seen in Memphis with its SCORPION unit.

When they’re jumping out, it’s like they’re attacking them. I'm not saying it can’t be done correctly...It may not be the right time (to create such a unit).

The fatal shooting of #HenryGreen

In 2016, Columbus police officers Zach Rosen and Jason Bare, who were a part of a specialized police unit, were involved in a shootout with 23-year-old Henry Green, who was killed.

At civil trial, Rosen and Bare were cleared of wrongdoing and found not liable for Green’s death. Evidence in the trial showed Green fired at the officers, who were in plain clothes and in an unmarked vehicle.

Green's family contends that Green did not know who the undercover plainclothes officers were and thought they were assailants coming for him. -Federal jury sides with Columbus officers in Henry Green wrongful death trial (April 22) https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/local/2022/04/26/federal-jury-sides-columbus-officers-henry-green-civil-trial/7354897001/

The unit Rosen and Bare were a part of was renamed several times in the years after the shooting, including as the "Safe Streets" program that stopped its operations because of the COVID pandemic in 2020.

"These special units too often encourage aggressive policing tactics that lead to encounters that end up violent and deadly, especially for people of color who encounter these units," Walton (attorney representing Green’s family) said. "We need more transparency and de-escalation and this new initiative seems to cast doubt on their commitment to both."

Walton said specialized police units "terrorized" the community for decades and the Columbus Division of Police has refused to acknowledge those mistakes.

[#]SinZaeReed #Forever13 #BlackLivesMatter

Help the family of Sinzae Reed

https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-the-family-of-sinzae-reed

Sin'Zae Reed, 13, was fatally shot Oct. 12 at the Wedgewood Apartments complex in #Columbus Hilltop neighborhood. His sister, 20-year-old Makayla Nichols, and other family members said Sinzae was a good kid and want justice for him from authorities. 36-year-old Krieg Butler, a resident of the complex, fatally shot Reed.

Megan Reed, Sin'Zae's mother, said her son will now always be a 13-year-old teenage boy that she can longer hold or hear him speak. In his obituary, family members remembered Reed, who went by 'Zay,' as a boy who loved music, video games and spending time with his friends. Reed attended KIPP Columbus, a charter school on the Northeast Side.

According to court records, an eyewitness saw Butler exit a red truck and fire multiple times at Reed. Butler then got back in the truck and fled the scene. Butler was initially charged with Reed's homicide and ordered held on $1 million bond, but prosecutors filed a motion to dismiss the case after Butler's arrest; Homicide charges were dropped pending further police investigation into Butler's claim of self-defense in the shooting.

"All I'm asking for is justice for my baby — is that too much to give?" Reed said. "I will never stop until Sin'Zae gets justice, I will forever be his voice."

Reed and others at the press conference called for the immediate re-arrest of Butler. Ramon Obey II, president of JUST 614 and event organizer, said he was calling on members of the community to pressure the Franklin County Prosecutor's office to take action.

Obey called Sunday for four points of action from criminal justice officials: that Butler be immediately re-arrested and charged with murder, that Franklin County Prosecutor Gary Tyack resign from his position, an apology from the city of Columbus to Reed's family and a U.S. Department of Justice investigation into the shooting.

Dejuan Sharp who has been advocating for Reed's family, said the criminal justice system was incapable of delivering justice to the family.

Obey said that community activists planned several events to continue to try and pressure the justice system into action against Butler. On Thursday, they plan to travel to Tyack's office and deliver a letter saying they want the removal of the member of his office responsible for dismissing the criminal charges against Butler. Next Saturday, a protest at noon at the Ohio Statehouse, where they plan to march for not just Reed, but also Donovan Lewis and Casey Goodson, who were both shot and killed by police officers in Franklin County.

On Jan. 9, Obey said he and others plan to attend Columbus City Council's next regular meeting and ask every member of council to sign a letter saying they support the immediate arrest of Butler and removal of Franklin County prosecutor personnel.
