A lot of the American freakout about China comes down to (1) anxiety that America may not be "top of the pecking order" anymore and (2) knowing of how America treated everyone else when they were "top of the pecking order."
It's the "wait, why are you worried about becoming a minority? Are minorities treated poorly or something?" post, but on a global scale.
