Obviously, I needed some more drama. At 10pm, I was settling in for another night on my daughter's uncomfortable sofa - until I heard a loud sound, followed by what sounded like a heavy monsoonal downpour. I knew no rain was forecasted, and SA does not get heavy summer rain, so went outside to check. No rain, of course. But the hot water system had an impressive hot geyser coming out of the top, hitting the roof, before falling down.
It's not my place, so I had no idea where the mains are. I think it's a shared metre with the other two units?
So, I walked through the shower of hot water, bare foot through a puddle (realised afterwards that was not a good idea, but it was an emergency). Found and unplugged the electrical cord, and turned lots of valves until I found the one that feeds water into the tank. Then picked up a loose hose, to stop water from gravity feeding out.
Now I am soaking wet. There's no hot water, it's the weekend, and I'm wondering how much of a bastard the new landords and agents are. So glad my daughter is moving out soon.
