It's so interesting to see the detailed decisions that went in the heads of some of the famous photographers when developing their film — "make this part slightly brighter, this one slightly darker, add a gradient there". And it's definitely something that photographers I've discussed it with do when prepping their raw images, even nowadays in digital format — it's not an arcane fine art retouching trick but something that could appear on anyone's wedding pictures when soliciting the help of a pro.
