@praetor Yea the parliamentary system works well, which is why we're happy to keep it. This might change depending on how the current king, and future king(s) are accepted by Canadians. As you know, Britain's been having a tough time keeping their colonies connected to the Crown.

There is a type of authority, because federal laws are presented to the Queen (King nowadays) via the Governor General, who then returns with the Royal Assent. And when government is prorogued or dissolved, they "give permission" from the Throne. They also deliver the Speech From The Throne. But this is pretty much all symbolic, and executive in nature. The word "advice" is used a lot.

That is to say, things can't be done without the Governor General's involvement, but it takes a lot for the GG to deny the PM's wishes... last time it happened was in 1926 when Canada was a very different place, and our connection to the monarchy was much stronger. All hell would break loose if Canada wanted something that was denied by the Crown.

In practice, it's a sort of pomp and circumstance thing.
