Around 2000, I worked for a software company, that had a shortage of office space and rented floorspace about 5km away. To extend our infrastructure, 2 pair of dark fibre were rented, one pair to transport 1Gbit ethernet, the other for a proprietary fibre coupling of the telephone system (Lucent ex-AT&T, I can't remember the model name), in the branch office, there was a box of modules that is basically just an fan-out unit to the phones.
