@dan Yes; their router has a "traditional" phone socket on the back (the rectangular kind you'd find on a BT wall socket) and the regular phone is just plugged in to that. I'm wondering if there's an aftermarket router which does the same but is less terrible than the Sky-provided box :)
(Also apparently it wasn't the router which died, it was the PON, which hopefully makes getting a swap done easier for them for now)
