When I made Vanillekipferl using my mother-in-law's recipe when I was living in Spain, everyone was impressed because they had never seen this Austrian specialty before. And it was hilarious when I insisted that everyone must say "Vanillekipferl" before they tasted them, but a German friend was stumped by the Austrian word "Kipferl".
Now that I'm back in Austria, where everyone has their own special recipe for Vanillekipferl, this is just embarrassing. They still taste good, but they look so clumsy, and I just want to ask my mother-in-law how to make them look elegant the way she did.
I seem to be missing my mother-in-law a lot this year.
