Yesterday I was getting worried, when I didn't hear from my goddaughter-in-law in the US. Today she explained that at the school where she works, they have all been scrambling to figure out how to protect all their ESL kids and how to make sure that all the kids have enough to eat, if federal funding for food programs is frozen.

There is so little I can do for my beloved goddaughter-in-law from this distance, but at least I can help her to make sure that she and her colleagues are not using Google to organize and communicate.

Now I get to help my sister's grandkids set up their very first email addresses using one of my domains hosted by @servus

One of my sons pointed out that, depending on how badly things might go under the current US government, it might eventually turn out to be a problem for them having email addresses hosted in Austria, since they unfortunately live in the US, but for now I am happy to help them get started with no dependency on Google.

Recently I have been thinking about holding a Death Cafe in Linz again, so I was looking at the Death Cafe website. I had completely forgotten about writing a blog post there about what people talk about at a Death Cafe, but re-reading some of my favorite quotations from conversations convinced me. I definitely want to hold a Death Cafe in Linz again.

I intended to continue cleaning while backing up my laptop, but Hester has apparently decided that I'm finished doing things today.

Somehow I can't reach the etherpad now, but since I promised to post it here anyway, this is a link to the project I mentioned yesterday during the #permacomputing conversation:

https://research.radical-openness.org/2015/

As part of the Research Lab 2015 leading to AMRO 2016 (not 2018), in a project initiated by @kairus , artists were given harddrives retrieved from Agbogbloshie, Ghana, the largest e-waste dump in the world, and invited to explore how much data they could resurface to use in art projects. The artists were actually surprised by how much data they were able to recover, leading to ethical questions about the use of personal data without the knowledge or consent of people who believed that data had been destroyed.

Loop is a gathering of members of the local @servus / AMRO community that takes place every third Wednesday of the month.

For the first Loop meeting of this year at 18:00 we will talk about the new community forum currently being set up, and at 19:00 we will remotely join @freebliss for a discussion about #permacomputing

Please join us if you are in #Linz!

Empfehlungen?

It has been nearly 50 years since I left the US, a choice I have never regretted. Yet even from this distance in time and space, it feels eerie to read that all the places where I remember living as a child are burning, all the schools I ever attended are closed, and breathing is now even more hazardous there than it was when smog turned the sky dirty yellow in the 1960s.

Which online translations or browser extensions would you recommend instead of google translate for translating a website? Is DeepL trustworthy? I've had good experiences with @Vivaldi, which uses Lingvanex, but would be interested in open source alternatives.

All day as I was trying to reorganize my flat after the holidays, Hester kept following me around, complaining the whole time. This did not help my already weak motivation. Now that I have decided to just read this evening, she is finally quiet and content.

When I made Vanillekipferl using my mother-in-law's recipe when I was living in Spain, everyone was impressed because they had never seen this Austrian specialty before. And it was hilarious when I insisted that everyone must say "Vanillekipferl" before they tasted them, but a German friend was stumped by the Austrian word "Kipferl".

Now that I'm back in Austria, where everyone has their own special recipe for Vanillekipferl, this is just embarrassing. They still taste good, but they look so clumsy, and I just want to ask my mother-in-law how to make them look elegant the way she did.

I seem to be missing my mother-in-law a lot this year.

Four months later, Hester still leaves room for Ginevra on the heating pad, even positioning herself to be the pillow, and it still breaks my heart.

Last night a young friend mentioned that he was annoyed with himself for spending so much time checking various news sites, so I asked him why he didn't use an #rss feed reader. He had no idea what that is, so I showed him, briefly explained it and helped him find a feed reader.

His enthusiasm for this New Thing was delightful.

It's very sweet when my son comes to my house to cook for me. I could perhaps do without the running commentary on the dire state of my kitchen, but I do appreciate the effort.

Two days ago I injured my hand, and in the hospital they told me I must keep the bandages dry, so I was feeling a bit helpless.

Then last night a friend came upstairs to wash my hair for me. It was such a beautiful, comforting feeling, and now that my hair is washed, I feel ready to face the next challenges.

Kindness and caring for one another makes all the difference.

Working at the Alte Welt is also how I met Peter, because when I was working the lunch shift, I always asked people about the books they were reading.

After quitting my studies in Innsbruck and then spending a lot of time hitchhiking, in March 1985 I ended up in Linz. I started working at a new restaurant/bar before I even had a place to live, which is how I ended up turning an abandoned space on the second floor into a living space for myself, which became Peter's workshop after we married, so I stayed in that space until 30 December 2015.

This evening we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the opening of that restaurant/bar, the Alte Welt.

This is bringing up a lot of memories now.

Before I go to Vienna tomorrow, I will accompany a friend and her kitten to the vet for a checkup. The kitten fell out of the window on Saturday, so we took him to the closest vet who was on emergency call on the weekend, so not the vet I usually see.

When the vet heard me speaking English with my friend and her cat (because I have taken on the role of extra English-speaking granny for any number of small humans and various companion species), he quickly switched to English too.

The only problem was that although my friend speaks English better than German, she was in shock and so terrified that she wasn't really understanding anything that wasn't Farsi (and all the messages she was getting in Farsi seemed to be saying that yes, the cat is definitely going to die, and Austrian doctors can't be trusted, so also not really helpful).

It was kindly meant, but in the end, it would have been better if the vet had continued speaking German with me, so I could explain it simply to my friend later. Since I'm much better at medical terminology in German than English, the vet's attempt to be helpful really just complicated everything more.
