Like, what if we leaned into the "it's kind of like email" analogy and made a federated server that's basically just an identity provider and message broker?
That's kind of how gotosocial and takahe work, but still within the constraints of the mastodon api spec, which is only the "standard" by virtue of being the first one that gained traction
I need to reread @djsundog 's thread along these lines from a few weeks back
People should be able to write clients to send and/or consume whatever the hell kind of federated content they want without having to use an ersatz twitter (or youtube, or instagram, etc) ui and api
