It seems absurd that if a person wanted to self-host federated video, images and music they would need to run three different total overkill (for one user) stacks at three different domains to do it

...like, why shouldn't there be a platform where I can just upload a file, and if you visit that file's permalink you get a UI that makes sense for whatever type of file it is? (Internet Archive with just a little more polish, basically. If there's a self-hostable federated archive.org-alike I haven't been able to find it)

I know a million unanticipated issues and edge cases would arise the moment someone tried to implement this but still, again,

what if people worked on new interesting human-scale ideas instead of "[twitter/instagram/youtube/reddit] but open source"

I am #dogfooding #crackpot as I work on it and it should not feel this thrilling to be able to just add a page to a website by dropping a text file in a directory, but that's how a couple of decades of CMSes, frameworks, and garbage javascript front-end development will rot your brain

Like, what if we leaned into the "it's kind of like email" analogy and made a federated server that's basically just an identity provider and message broker?

That's kind of how gotosocial and takahe work, but still within the constraints of the mastodon api spec, which is only the "standard" by virtue of being the first one that gained traction

I need to reread @djsundog 's thread along these lines from a few weeks back

People should be able to write clients to send and/or consume whatever the hell kind of federated content they want without having to use an ersatz twitter (or youtube, or instagram, etc) ui and api
