Today marks the 65th anniversary of the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959:

  1. Antarctica should only be used for peaceful purposes.

  1. Freedom of scientific investigation in Antarctica is protected.

  1. Scientific observations and results from Antarctica should be exchanged and made freely available.

  1. Nuclear explosions and the disposal of radioactive waste material are prohibited.
