Alice, the author of the story and the Bluesky post I linked to, reached out to me. It turns out that the 18 GB/day figure was only taking into account content from Jetstream, which provides JSON data rather than the raw DAG-CBOR data used by atproto. This means the actual growth rate is something like 10x as much.
